Presents experiments which compare two theories of memory for routine events, one emphasizing temporal sequence of events, the other focusing on events' hierarchical structure or centrality. Effects of the orientation of knowledge maps on learning were studied with 28 undergraduate students who were randomly assigned to study maps presented vertically or horizontally. Performance of high and low vocabulary subjects was evaluated. Low vocabulary subjects who used linear maps performed more poorly than any other group. (SLD)

Three experiments explored four and seven year olds' and adults' knowledge of taxonomy, including horizontal relations between items at the same hierarchical level and vertical relations between items at different hierarchical levels.
