Fincham, David – School Organisation, 1991
In comparing and contrasting the year (horizontal) and house (vertical) systems of pastoral (guidance) organization and management in British secondary schools, this article examines a model combining pastoral and academic concerns by establishing a vertical system. This system is proposed as the most effective way to integrate these two concerns.…

Ludlow, Larry H.; Hillocks, George, Jr. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1985
In the present research, the psychometric models of Rasch and Guttman are used to illustrate contrasting yet complementary approaches to investigating reading skill hierarchies. The models share a general conclusion, but specific results from the Rasch model underscore its greater potential as a reading skills diagnostic technique. (Author/LMO)

Gower, D. M.; Daniels, D. J. – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 1980
The facility index of a test item is the percentage of testees choosing the correct response. A common curriculum model presents process and content as two dimensions of the difficulty of an educational task. Wheeler suggested a third dimension: precision. This three-dimensional model is applied to chemistry education. (BW)

McMahon, Robert C.; And Others – Adolescence, 1982
Explored patterns of stability and change in value hierarchies of a group of superior students who were high school seniors during the 1966-1967 academic year. Results indicated subjects had 1966 value hierarchies which were reasonably predictive of value hierarchies seven years later. (Author)

Shapiro, Amy M. – Journal of the Learning Sciences, 1999
Explores the relevance of hierarchies to information processing. Suggests that participants in all conditions create hierarchical representations as they work, and those in nonlinear conditions use this structure to guide their exploration of the material. An important function of hierarchies may be to define relationships between concepts.…

MacDonald, Theodore H. – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1986
A sequence for teaching quadratic equations is presented. Considered are: multiplying arithmetic binomials, multiplying algebraic polynomials, reversing the process, missing terms, perfect squares, other special forms and diagrams, quadratic equations, completing the square, systematizing the process, the general form, graphing equations, and…

Teese, Richard – British Journal of Sociology of Education, 1998
Examines the changing relationship of Australian private schools to the academic curriculum over the period of 1947-1985. Attempts to demonstrate that the modernization of private non-Catholic schools in Australia supported the curriculum against pressures for reform and caused the growth of public schooling to be less effective. (CMK)

Griffin, Diana; Smith, R. A. – Forum for the Discussion of New Trends in Education, 1978
Using the benefits to students and teachers alike in mathematics classes as an example, the author describes a successful attempt to group students vertically (students of different ages in the same class) in a combined high school and community college. (KC)

LECZNAR, WILLIAM B.; MORRISON, EDWARD J. – 1966
THE PRINCIPAL GOAL OF PROJECT ABLE IS TO DEMONSTRATE THE INCREASED EFFECTIVENESS OF INSTRUCTION WHERE THE CONTENT IS DERIVED FROM AN ANALYSIS OF DESIRED BEHAVIOR AFTER GRADUATION. IT ALSO ATTEMPTS TO APPLY NEWLY DEVELOPED EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY TO THE DESIGN, CONDUCT, AND EVALUATION OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION. THIS REPORT CONSIDERS THE PROBLEM OF…

Tamir, Pinchas – Scottish Educational Review, 1986
Examines Israeli teacher autonomy in a centrally developed high school curriculum. Describes how teachers view this shift of control and the 50 percent assessment-by-teacher system. Concludes teacher autonomy is not necessarily dependent on the system being noncentralist and that guided freedom increases teacher power and potential effectiveness.…

Gerhard, Christian – 1983
The intended significance of text conventions must be understood if reasonably convergent text interpretation is to occur. If students can learn to recognize structural cues or signals, then they can group words into units with particular inner relationships. Expository text comprehension consists of integrating at least three structures: the…

Pinge, Ian – English in Australia, 1978
Describes teaching methods used in an English program for a heterogeneous group of students. (RL)
Descriptors: Academic Ability, Curriculum Development, English Instruction, Foreign Countries
Hart, K. M.; And Others – 1980
This research is part of the London-based Concepts in Secondary Mathematics and Science Project. It is derived from developmental psychology, with particular emphasis on the implications of the results to the teaching of mathematics in secondary schools. A basic premise is that if one first identifies the child's present level of understanding of…

Simpson, Mary – Scottish Educational Review, 1986
Charts development and describes features of multidisciplinary health studies course emphasizing experiential learning being introduced as part of Munn and Dunning development program. Suggests methods for easing tensions generated when aspects of school-based development are introduced into centrally controlled curriculum change to develop…

Hoy, Wayne K.; Sousa, David A. – Alberta Journal of Educational Research, 1984
Decision making was studied in 55 public secondary schools in New Jersey. Aston's methodology was used and showed that principals who shared decison making had teachers who were more loyal, satisfied, and described the authority structure as less rigid. A distinction was made between delegated and joint decison making. (author/dc).
