Examined pre- and posttreatment scores on the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y) for 107 veterans in an alcoholic treatment program. Significant differences between pre- and posttreatment scores suggested that the STAI (Form Y) is appropriate for assessing changes in anxiety with alcoholic patients. (JAC)

Vietnam combat veterans diagnosed as having Postraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) differed significantly in the intensity of their combat experiences and their perceptions of their homecoming experiences from controls who were also combat veterans. Compared three short forms of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (IRF, FAM, and MMPI-168) to the full scale in male veterans aged 60 and over (N=100). Results demonstrated no strong statistical advantage for any short form but indicated that the IRF, because of increased comprehensibility, might have wider applicability. (LLL)

Developed and evaluated a home-based contracting program to determine its effect on the compliance rates of 25 discharged alcohol patients to a disulfiram (antabuse) regimen. Compared sex role attributes of male alcoholic veterans to those of 81 nonalcoholic veterans and 386 college students. Results showed male alcoholics were sex-typed more frequently as feminine than masculine.
