BLAU, HAROLD; BLAU, HARRIET – 1968
A THEORY OF TEACHING SEVERELY HANDICAPPED READERS TO READ BY MODALITY BLOCKING OR NONVISUAL ATK, THE AUDITORY-KINESTHETIC-TACTILE METHOD, RATHER THAN BY STRENGTHENING ALL SENSORY MODALITIES IS REPORTED. INDIVIDUALS WHO SPEAK ADEQUATELY BUT WHO READ INADEQUATELY SUFFER INTERFERENCE FROM THE VISUAL INPUT SYSTEM IN THE LEARNING OF READING. IF THE…

Rodenborn, Leo V., Jr. – 1972
Presented is a test used to measure visual perception ability, which consists of 30 groups of forms that are similar to lines used in forming letters, but do not make letters. They are comparable to nonsense syllables used to simulate words. Each group includes four forms and is numbered. The test was used in Rodenborn's study to determine the…

Schlenker, Richard M.
Two groups of continuing education students were tested using three of Viktor Lowenfeld's tests of visual-haptic perception. The scores from the three tests were added to yield a score which identified an individual's location on Lowenfeld's visual-haptic continuum. The investigation also uncovered scoring problems with two of the tests which had…

Streitfeld, Barbara; Wilson, Martha – Cognitive Psychology, 1986
This article investigates categorical perception as a phenomenon which can be understood in terms of adaptation level theory. Data from four experiments, two visual and two tactual-kinesthetic, supports the idea that categorical perception is a pervasive characteristic of perceptual organization. (JAZ)

Maginnis, George H. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1986
The use of a nonvisual tactual and auditory tutorial method to teach initial reading skills to 16 reading disabled children (ages 7 to 14) was evaluated. The method was shown to be less effective than sighted methods. (DB)

Mann, Lester – Amer J Orthopsychiat, 1970
An argument centered on perceptual-motor training as an educational fad and a criticism of training approaches. Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Orthopsychiatric Association (New York, New York, 1969). (RJ)

Holloway, Gordon F. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1971
The investigation of the perceptual integrative abilities of 6 to 9-year-old language delayed children with nonspecific etiologies showed them to vary from normal controls in auditory-visual integrative ability and perception of distorted speech, but not in visual-motor integrative behavior. (KW)

Turbayne, Colin Murray – ETC: A Review of General Semantics, 1971
Argues that visuals constitute a language" in that they suggest physical objects . . . just as words signify their referents;" an adaptation of a paper presented at national convention of Department of Audiovisual Instruction, YNational Education AssociationI (Houston, Texas, March 28, 1968). O'Neill, Daniela K.; Chong, Selena C. F. – Child Development, 2001
Explored in 2 studies 3- and 4-year-olds' understanding that the 5 senses can each lead to different types of knowledge. Found that 3-year-olds performed significantly poorer than 4-year-olds on all tasks, suggesting a marked transition in children's ability to recognize the origin of their modality-specific knowledge between 3 and 4 years.…

McGurk, Harry; And Others – Child Development, 1977
In these two studies, neonatal oculomotor behavior was observed under various conditions of visual and auditory stimulation. Findings showed auditory and visual perception to be relatively independent during the neonatal period. (Author/JMB)

Granrud, Carl E.; And Others – Child Development, 1984
A total of 20 infants either five or seven months of age viewed computer-generated random-lot displays in which accretion and deletion of texture provided the only information for contours. Infants of both age groups showed significant preferences to reach for the apparently nearer regions in the displays. (Author/RH)

Acredolo, Linda P.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1984
Investigates the role active, self-produced movement might play in the type of rotation task typically used to assess spatial orientation in children 12 months to 18 months of age. Results indicated that, at least at 12 months, spatial orientation was indeed facilitated by allowing the infants (n = 13) to move through space on their own. (RH)
