Three experiments compared congenitally blind and sighted adults and children on paired-associate, free-recall, and imaging tasks presumed to involve visual imagery in memory. Differences in how the two hemispheres of the brain handle spatial information were studied with blind subjects and blindfolded sighted subjects. Forty blind children and adolescents had to learn two unknown environments and then externalize the spatial representation via two methods--building a scale model and verbally estimating distances.
