Tranel, Bernard – Language, 1976
The analysis presented here comprises a series of morphophonological rules (nasalization, assimilation, degemination) and a proposal for the way in which "in-" is incorporated in the lexicon. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: French, Generative Phonology, Linguistic Theory, Morphology (Languages)

Klamer, Marian – Language, 2002
Reports on a study of the native lexicon of two genetically unrelated languages: Kambera and Dutch. Focuses on the expressive elements. (Author/VWL)
Descriptors: Contrastive Linguistics, Dutch, Language Patterns, Semantics

Lehrer, Adrienne – Language, 1975
A structural analysis of the wine vocabulary used by wine experts is given. Experiments involving typical wine drinkers show that there is little consensus in how the words are applied to wine. Communication tasks show that the sender and receiver of messages about wine perform little better than chance. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Adjectives, Alcoholic Beverages, Communication (Thought Transfer), Language Research

Bolinger, Dwight – Language, 1973
Presidential address delivered to the Linguistic Society of America at its Annual Meeting, December 28, 1972, Atlanta, Georgia. (DD)
Descriptors: Communication (Thought Transfer), Correlation, Evaluative Thinking, Mutual Intelligibility

Davis, Anthony R.; Koening, Jean-Pierre – Language, 2000
Proposes an account of linking patterns that does away with intermediary mechanisms such as thematic or actor/undergoer hierarchies. Shows that the generalizations a linking theory needs to capture can be modeled via the same mechanisms as other lexical generalizations, using conditions specified within the hierarchy of word classes. (Author/VWL)

Beard, Robert – Language, 1976
A context-sensitive, generative lexical rule model is developed that is capable of overcoming the insufficiencies of both the transformationalist and the lexicalist approaches to work formation, e.g., semantic-syntactic asymmetry, metaphoric usage, and restricted rule productivity. (DB)
Descriptors: Adjectives, Form Classes (Languages), Language Usage, Linguistic Theory

Montgomery, Thomas – Language, 1978
A type of sound symbolism that has influenced the composition of modern Spanish vocabulary is discussed. Rates of lexical retention and loss are attributed to the degree to which verbs fit the developing morphophonemic and semantic patterns. (EJS)
Descriptors: Diachronic Linguistics, Grammar, Language Patterns, Language Variation

Kay, Paul; McDaniel, Chad K. – Language, 1978
Recent empirical research into the meaning of words for color provides evidence that contradicts two widely held beliefs in linguistics and the philosophy of language. This paper presents a summary of this evidence, uses it as a basis to construct a general model of basic color-term semantics, and explores the implications of this model for…
