From 1978 to 1980 a committee worked to determine the status of philanthropy and voluntary organizations in America and to recommend efforts to strengthen the nonprofit sector. The committee's findings led to the establishment of INDEPENDENT SECTOR, a national forum to encourage giving, volunteering, and not-for-profit initiative. (Author/MLW)
