Results of research to limit or expand identification of vowel frequency bands show that [i], [a], and [u] sounds are highly recognizable when filtered through a single frequency zone, but that other vowels under the same conditions are less easily recognized than those obtained by the direct channel. By electronically segmenting stimuli in German, two tests of perception of quantity related to tense or lax syllabic quantity were made possible. In one, the physical duration of the stressed vowel was shortened, and in the other, the occlusion of the consonant following the stressed vowel was shortened. (MSE)
