Keyser, S. Jay – 1970
This paper begins by distinguishing phonology (the study of the systematic nature of the inter-relations of sounds in a language) from phonetics (the attempt to describe completely all the physical properties of an utterance). It is shown how in any language some properties of sounds are intuitively more relevant to the grammar and functioning of…

Montgomery, Allen A.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1987
The effects of consonantal context on vowel lipreading were assessed for 30 adult males with mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss who lipread videotape recordings of two female talkers. Results indicated that vowel intelligibility was significantly poorer in most contexts involving highly visible consonants. (Author/DB)

Berman, Jonathan I. – 1995
The pronunciation of voiceless stops in the initial and final position of monosyllabic words was studied with nine individuals (ages 13-17) with Down's Syndrome to determine whether the vowel affects the consonant production. A 55-page review of previous literature and research on the phonology of speakers with Down's Syndrome is included. The…

McCabe, Don – 1993
Noting that any word in the English language may be defined as having a "base" sound that conveys meaning, this booklet argues that the literacy problem may be solved through systematic instruction in the mechanics of English spelling. The booklet discusses the two distinct types of bases in the English language--common (one syllable)…

Schane, Sanford A.; Pisoni, David B. – 1970
An experiment was conducted to investigate the linguistic concept of a hierarchy of syllable structures. Subjects were asked to identify different types of consonant clusters in initial, medial, and final positions in words. Little psycholinguistic evidence was discovered to support the hierarchical ordering described in the linguistic literature.…

Yannakoudakis, E. J.; Fawthrop, D. – Information Processing and Management, 1983
Results of analysis of 1,377 spelling error forms including three categories of spelling errors (consonantal, vowel, and sequential) demonstrate that majority of spelling errors are highly predictable when set of predefined rules based on phonological and sequential considerations are followed algorithmically.
