Dual Identities: A Blessing or a Curse? The Role of School Leaders and Mothers
Meredith Haugens
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Aurora University
As women have always dominated the teaching workforce in education, females remain the minority when it comes to representation at the superintendent level. The field of research often covers common barriers associated with the lack of women in the position. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the impact of motherhood on a woman's leadership and career path. Six women with the dual identity of being a mother and leader participated in a series of two semi-structured interviews. The lens of O'Reilly's (2016) matricentric feminist perspective was utilized as a theoretical framework to explore the lived experiences of each of the women and develop a deep understanding of the influence of motherhood. A number of themes emerged from the data that were consistent with the literature on barriers females face but the matricentric lens of this study offered new insight into the effects of motherhood on women's administrative leadership and career trajectories. The results of this study highlighted the impact that the patriarchal structure of U.S. society plays on women with dual identities as leaders and mothers. This qualitative study offers implications for the field of education and American culture as a whole. It aims to increase the awareness that the structure of society and motherhood puts on female leaders. In addition, there is education and professional development that the field could benefit from that will promote gender equality across all positions in leadership. Recommendations for future research include the deep examination of parenting and the impact of parenthood on both male and female participants from various backgrounds.
