Higher education's leading national women's organizations are actively developing networks on large scales to translate the messages of the women's movement to higher education, linking women students, faculty, and administrators in a variety of endeavors including job placement, information sharing, and trouble-shooting. Clare Boothe Luce left a special trust whose sole purpose is to "encourage women to enter, study, graduate, and teach" science. Fourteen institutions were designated by her to use money to support the advancement of female students and faculty members in science and engineering. (MLW)

Studies conducted in the University of California system and at the University of Virginia reveal that they have yet to take the necessary steps to diversify their faculties. Financial incentives were recommended to encourage departments to meet hiring goals. (MLW)

The institutions making efforts to study and change faculty salary disparities for men and women are finding that determining what constitutes a fair salary review and adjustment is difficult. Other institutions are resisting making changes. (MSE)

The myriad duties in academic life make it especially difficult to keep stress under control. Some of the reasons academic careers are so stressful include: competition, low pay and poor working conditions, tight resources, lessened mobility, growth in part-time positions, and high self-expectations. Many academic administrators consider the future job market "a golden opportunity" for universities to increase the representation of women on their faculties. However, lingering sexual bias in hiring and promotion decisions, as well as a shortage of women with doctorates in scientific fields, may cloud that promise. (MLW)
