In response to the plateau of achievement advanced English-as-a-Second-Language students often reach, where they see little need for improvement, an instructor developed a program to help these students apply and improve writing skills outside of the immediate academic context. (CB)

Argues that when students of English as a second language (ESL) use English in preparing and writing assignments in other subjects of study, they face communication problems that deserve special attention in the language class. English as a second language writing lessons, based on issues discussed in editorial letters in a local Malawi newspaper, provide practice in identifying opinions, identifying supporting evidence, checking argument logic, producing opinions, finding evidence to support opinions, and presenting logically-argued letters. A method is described for teaching writing of English as a second language that emphasizes exposure to genuine, useful language and opportunities to use it.
