This article surveys the history of individualized writing instruction. A theoretical rationale for such instruction is developed, and experimental studies dealing with individualized instruction are summarized. A model for individualized instruction, based on a student-centered approach, is presented. (CB)

This article discusses how ethnographic research can provide valuable insights into the nature and function of writing which can, in turn, be used to improve writing instruction in schools. (MT)

Concerns arise about two of the most widely used measurements in writing research because of faulty logic in the construction of the Writing Apprehension Test and the possibility of incomplete analytic procedures using T-unit analyses. Two experiments were conducted to address these concerns. Results are discussed. (Author/MT)
