Who Falls for Social Media? Examining Personality Profiles of Facebook and Instagram Users from Adlerian Theory

This research comprised two studies to examine the psychometric properties of the Generalised Problematic Internet Use Scale-2 (GPIUS-2) and investigate personality profiles of problematic internet use (PIU) in the context of social media from an Adlerian theory perspective. In Study 1 (N = 320), exploratory factor analysis was conducted and four factors of PIU were reported and the psychometric properties of the GPIUS-2 were then evaluated for reliability and validity. In Study 2 (N = 323), confirmatory factor analysis of the GPIUS-2 was conducted, and the results validated a four-factor dimensional structure. In addition, cluster analysis and multivariate analysis of variance were employed to evaluate the scale's use in the context of social media from an Adlerian theory perspective. In conclusion, the Mandarin version of the GPIUS-2 was valid and, if integrated with Adlerian theory, can offer insights into the PIU's interpersonal facets and its relevance to personality.
