Descriptors: Attitude Change, Career Change, Change Agents, Coping
Peer reviewedArnold, John F. – Clearing House, 1980
The stereotyped, media-perpetuated view of early adolescence as a period of storm and stress is highly destructive. By defining all young adolescents as innately egotistical and rebellious, we risk a self-fulfilling prophecy and we limit their chances to develop as individuals and to assume responsibility. (Author/SJL)
Descriptors: Adolescent Development, Editorials, Junior High School Students, Junior High Schools
Peer reviewedBernstein, Barbara Elaine – Adolescence, 1978
The author correlates the generation gap to the complexity of modern Western society, in which adulthood is delayed for adolescents and in which parent and child of necessity have separate work and leisure activities and, therefore, little chance to interact. (SJL)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Adults, Developed Nations, Generation Gap
Peer reviewedBassin, Marc; And Others – Theory into Practice, 1979
A renewal model for an inner-city high school is described and learnings from its planning, implementation, and experience are presented. (JD)
Descriptors: Change Agents, Change Strategies, Cooperative Planning, Problem Solving
Peer reviewedWenz, Friedrich V. – Adolescence, 1979
Dean's alienation scale was employed with a sample of adolescent suicide attempters. Several variables were examined by multiple regression procedures and eight found to be statistically significant. The fact that adolescence, by itself, seems to be a good predictor of whether a person will attempt suicide is discussed (Author/SJL)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Adolescents, Emotional Problems, Individual Characteristics
Peer reviewedRafky, David M. – Adolescence, 1979
The major implication of this study is that school rebellion is not a response to the school experience itself. Other findings are presented concerning the scalability of school disruption items, the nature of expressive alienation and its components, and the impact of sex, race, and neighborhood on school rebellion. (KC)
Descriptors: Antisocial Behavior, Critical Path Method, Delinquency, Racial Differences
Peer reviewedWelsh, Paul J. – Race Equality Teaching, 2002
Explored youth disaffection, focusing on K-12 schools in England and France. Within the disaffected cohort, those from ethnic minorities were doubly…
Descriptors: Diversity (Student), Elementary Secondary Education, Ethnicity, Foreign Countries

Dodge, Susan – Chronicle of Higher Education, 1990
Foreign students say that because university representatives rarely reach out to them, they rely on each other for advice on everything from academic schedules to American culture. But administrators say foreign students do not always take advantage of the resources, and stick together rather than mix with Americans. (MLW)
Descriptors: College Students, Cultural Differences, Cultural Isolation, Culture Conflict

Descriptors: Cheating, Correlation, Family Influence, High School Students
Peer reviewedGlatthorn, Allan A. – Thresholds in Education, 1995
Excessive concern about test scores exacerbates student alienation. As one California student survey shows, there are too many schools without heart. Recent research indicates that schools structured as caring communities have better holding power and curricula to help students create meaning through knowledge-based problem solving. (MLH)
Descriptors: Alienation, Community, Educational Environment, School Culture
