Guttman, Louis – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1992
Argues that Jensen's article contains an inaccurate and misleading account of Spearman's work and distorts the basic concepts of factor analysis. The target article has failed in all its main objectives; its major failing is a result of the irrelevance of factor analysis to the study of group differences. (SLD)

Thissen, David; And Others – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1994
Restricted factor analysis shows that the multiple-choice and free-response sections of the Computer Science and Chemistry Advanced Placement examinations (College Board) measure the same proficiencies for the most part. There is a small degree of multidimensionality because of local dependence among free-response items. (SLD)

Harnqvist, Kjell; And Others – Intelligence, 1994
Scores on ability tests given to 1,274 students in grades 4-6 and 1,310 in grades 7-9 were simultaneously factor analyzed at class and individual levels. At the individual level, the general factor was most highly loaded on fluid abilities. Three common factors were established at the class level. (SLD)

Roznowski, Mary; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1994
A Monte Carlo investigation of simplex fitting as a method of determining the dimensionality of binary data matrices was conducted. Examination of the fit of correlation matrices with a known factor structure to correlation matrices that represent the perfect simplex shows that simplex fitting is a feasible approach under some circumstances. Kelley, Paul – Journal of Educational Television, 1991
Discussion of children's comprehension of television focuses on a study in the United Kingdom that examined whether a successful course of television literacy could be developed for use with students from 5 to 12 years old. Treatments of experimental and control groups are explained, and correlations to other media are examined. (29 references)…

Freund, Lisa S.; Reiss, Allan L. – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 1991
Parent and teacher ratings on the Aberrant Behavior Checklist with an outpatient sample of 110 children, adolescents, and young adults with mental retardation found that the 5-factor structure of both parent and teacher data corresponded very well with the 5 factors originally obtained from staff ratings of mentally retarded inpatients. Tustin, R. Don; And Others – Australia and New Zealand Journal of Developmental Disabilities, 1991
Analysis of data from the Behaviour Disorder Scale for 405 adults and adolescents with intellectual disability revealed that subjects exhibited a mean of 14 problem behaviors per person. Factor analysis identified two general syndromes (a conduct syndrome and an emotional syndrome), raising the possibility of dealing with sets of problem behaviors…

Cudeck, Robert; And Others – Psychometrika, 1993
An implementation of the Gauss-Newton algorithm for the analysis of covariance structure that is specifically adapted for high-level computer languages is reviewed. This simple method for estimating structural equation models is useful for a variety of standard models, as is illustrated. (SLD)

Bain, Sherry K. – Journal of Special Education, 1993
Analysis of Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) Sequential and Simultaneous Processing scores of 94 children (ages 6-12) with learning disabilities produced factor patterns generally supportive of the traditional K-ABC Mental Processing structure with the exception of Spatial Memory. The sample exhibited relative processing strengths…

Watters, Derek A.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1990
Factor analysis problems of scales with dichotomous items were illustrated using the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale for Children. A different solution than that of R. E. Lindal and P. H. Venables (1983) was obtained, despite using similar samples--2 random samples of 671 and 674 male seventh and eighth graders. (SLD)

Woodrow, Janice E. J. – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1991
Examines and compares the characteristics of four computer attitude scales: (1) Stevens'"Computer Survey"; (2) Reece and Gable's "Attitudes toward Computers"; (3) Gressard and Loyd's "Computer Attitude Scale"; and (4) Griswold's "Computer Use Questionnaire." Attitudes toward computer scales are examined, and…

Bolin, Brien L.; Dodder, Richard A. – Journal of Social Psychology, 1990
Tests the validity of the Affect Balance Scale test (ABS) using a sample of 380 undergraduates at Oklahoma State University. Finds students' answers reflect duality of feelings. Concludes researchers must be cautious in their choice of scales comparing psychological well-being over the life course. (NL)

Mahoney, Gerald; And Others – Topics in Early Childhood Special Education, 1990
A national survey assessing the degree and kind of family intervention services received was completed by 503 mothers with handicapped children in early intervention programs. Factor analysis was performed and items used to construct the Family-Focused Intervention Scale with 5 reliable subscales. Comparisons among groups of mothers supported…
