Hill, A. Lewis; Siverman, Wayne P. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1978
Visual perseveration was investigated within educable mentally retarded and second, fifth, and eighth grade normal children (N = 12 each group). (Author)

Cutler, Anne; Cooper, William E. – Journal of Phonetics, 1978
Tested whether listeners' reaction times for monitoring a predetermined phoneme are influenced by phonetic constraints on ordering. Reaction times were significantly shorter for phoneme monitoring in monosyllable-bisyllable sequences than in bisyllable-monosyllable sequences; however, reaction times were not significantly different for high-low vs…

Miller, Maurice H. – New York University Education Quarterly, 1977
Noise is the single most omnipresent noxious contaminant in the American environment, yet little attention has been paid to its dangers and relatively small amounts of money spent to control it. Compares the effects and management of hearing impairment due to noise with those resulting from other causes. (Editor)

Rincover, Arnold; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1977
This experiment assessed the reinforcing properties of sensory stimulation for autistic children using three different types of sensory stimulation: music, visual flickering, and visual movement. (SB)

Alexander, Richard – Developmental Psychology, 1977
Experiment 1 compared 6- and 8-year-old boys in inter- and intramodal matching of fast or slow spatiotemporal patterns with long or short interpattern intervals. Experiment 2 made the same comparisons for 7- and 9-year-old boys using temporal patterns. (Author/JMB)

Caron, Albert J.; And Others – Child Development, 1988
Results showed that infants can differentiate dynamic, multimodal expressions as early as five months of age; can distinguish dynamically distinct expressions before similarly animated expressions; and seem to rely more on the voice than the face in making these discriminations. (RH)

Werth, Louise H. – Early Child Development and Care, 1984
Explains the need to establish alternate communication devices between mothers and their blind infants. Mothers must demonstrate a natural ability to respond to auditory and manual cues, rather than visual cues. The importance of "tactual intimacy" is also stressed. (AS)

Clarkson, Marsha G.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1985
Two experiments assessed the importance of sound duration for eliciting head orientation responses from newborn infants. Results suggest that newborns' head orientation response may reflect a motor program that is initiated by auditory input and then executed in a similar fashion regardless of further stimulation. (Author/AS)

Mulliken, Colleen N.; Henk, William A. – Journal of Reading, 1985
Reports on a study during which intermediate level students were exposed to three auditory backgrounds while reading (no music, classical music, and rock music), and their subsequent comprehension performance was measured. Concludes that the auditory background during reading may affect comprehension and that, for most students, rock music should…

Lawson, Katharine R.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1984
Compares the response of preterm and full-term infants to moving objects presented with or without accompanying sound. Finds differences in attention and recognition between full-terms and preterms at three months of age. At six months of age only high-risk preterms showed different responses than full-terms, suggesting that they are at a…

Engle, Randall W.; Mobley, Linda A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
This study tests the idea that visual presentation leads to higher performance on a delayed recall test than auditory presentation. It is predicted that the normal immediate free recall procedure yields a different pattern of results on a delayed test than a condition having immediate recall of each list. (CLK)

Watkins, Michael J.; Watkins, Olga C. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1973
With a serial-recall procedure the last few items are better recalled following auditory as opposed to visual presentation. The present study investigated the locus of this modality effect. (Editor)
