DeBacker, Teresa K.; Crowson, H. Michael – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 2006
Background: Research indicates that achievement goals influence cognitive engagement, which, in turn, influences academic achievement. We believe that there are other individual difference variables in the realm of personal epistemology that may also directly or indirectly influence cognitive engagement; specifically, epistemological beliefs and…

Martin, Andrew J. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 2006
Background: This study seeks to identify the cornerstones of personal bests (PBs) in the educational setting. Aims: The study proposes a multidimensional PB model in which students are most likely to attain PBs on tasks/goals that are (1) specific, (2) challenging, (3) competitively self-referenced, and (4) self-improvement based. Sample: The…

Lee, Hyeon Woo – ProQuest LLC, 2008
Instructional designers need to understand the internal processes of learning, identify learners' cognitive difficulties with those processes, and create strategies to help learners overcome those difficulties. Generative learning theory, one conception of human learning about cognitive functioning and process, emphasizes that meaningful learning…

Suldo, Shannon M.; Mihalas, Stephanie; Powell, Heather; French, Rachel – School Psychology Quarterly, 2008
The current study examined important predictors of substance use during early adolescence. The authors hypothesized that adolescents' relationships with key adults (i.e., teachers and parents) influence their choices to use substances indirectly through links with their decisions regarding peer groups. A total of 461 middle school students from an…

Kliewer, Wendy; Sullivan, Terri N. – Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, 2008
Validity data are presented for a new measure of threat appraisals in response to community violence. Adolescents (N = 358; 45% male; 91% African American, M = 12.10 years, SD = 1.63) and their maternal caregivers participated in two waves of a longitudinal interview study focused on the consequences of exposure to community violence. Structural…

Nomura, Yoko; Rajendran, Khushmand; Brooks-Gunn, Jeanne; Newcorn, Jeffrey H. – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2008
Background: There is uncertainty about the extent to which mildly sub-optimal perinatal characteristics among individuals born near-term (greater than 33 weeks of gestation) are associated with various subsequent childhood problems, including antisocial behavior. There is even more uncertainty about whether the pathway to antisocial behavior…

Huang, Denise; Coordt, Allison; La Torre, Deborah; Leon, Seth; Miyoshi, Judy; Perez, Patricia; Peterson, Cynthia – National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST), 2007
The relationship between afterschool staff and students is very important for encouraging and promoting longevity in school. The primary goal of this study was to examine the connection between perceptions of staff-student relationships and the educational values, future aspirations, and engagement of LA's BEST students. To this end, we…

Kats-Gold, Inna; Besser, Avi; Priel, Beatriz – Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, 2007
Poor social skills and behavioral problems are a major component of ADHD. The different explanations offered so far, such as cognitive deficits and deficient self regulation, have not been able fully to account for the various aspects of the social dysfunction, suggesting that other mechanisms might underlay this impairment. Our study sought to…

Sun, Rachel C. F.; Hui, Eadaoin K. P. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 2007
This study aimed to investigate the family, school, peer and psychological factors that contribute to adolescent suicidal ideation. The participants were 1,358 (680 boys and 678 girls) Hong Kong Chinese adolescents who were divided into younger (12.3 years, n = 694) and older (15.4 years, n = 664) age groups. By using structural equation modeling,…

Hemphill, Sheryl A.; Herrenkohl, Todd I.; LaFazia, Andrea N.; McMorris, Barbara J.; Toumbourou, John W.; Arthur, Michael W.; Catalano, Richard F.; Hawkins, J. David; Bond, Lyndal – Crime & Delinquency, 2007
Some extant theory and empirical research suggests that youth problem behaviors, such as substance abuse and delinquency, reflect a single underlying dimension of behavior, whereas others suggest there are several different dimensions. Few studies have examined potential international differences in the structure of problem behavior, where…

Fan, Xitao; And Others – 1997
A Monte Carlo study was conducted to assess the effects of some potential confounding factors on structural equation modeling (SEM) fit indices and parameter estimates for both true and misspecified models. The factors investigated were data nonnormality, SEM estimation method, and sample size. Based on the fully crossed and balanced 3x3x4x2…

Perkhounkova, Yelena; Koehly, Laura M.; Dunbar, Stephen B. – 2000
This study was conducted to investigate the dimensionality of language tests by means of latent variable models for categorical data. It differs from previous studies by conducting the analysis at the level of the original items using the structural modeling approach of B. Muthen (1984) for dichotomous and ordered polytomous variables. In this…

Mueller, Ralph O. – Structural Equation Modeling, 1997
Basic philosophical and statistical issues in structural equation modeling (SEM) are reviewed, including model conceptualization, identification, and parameter estimation and data-model-fit assessment and model modification. These issues should be addressed before the researcher uses any of the new generation of SEM software. (SLD)

Tremblay, Paul F.; Gardner, Robert C. – Structural Equation Modeling, 1996
The distribution of technical and substantive structural equation modeling (SEM) articles published in psychological journals from 1987 to 1994 was studied through inspection of more than 1,050 abstracts in the "PsycLIT" system. There has been a clear increase in the number of journals and the number of substantive SEM articles. (SLD)

Marsh, Herbert W.; Yeung, Alexander Seeshing – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1997
Data on academic self-concept, school grades, and teacher ratings of achievement were collected from 603 students for three high school subjects in each of three years. Structural equation models show reciprocal effects for prior achievement and academic self-concept for all subjects. Effects were largest for mathematics. (SLD)
