Taub, Harvey A. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1974
Investigates the relationship between age and the use of chunking as an effective coding strategy for short-term memory storage with young, middle-aged and old females. (ED)

Levy, B. A.; Clark, F. I. M. – Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1975
The present experiments explored ways in which information encoded along different dimensions might be co-ordinated to determine memory performance. (Editor)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Memory, Psychological Studies, Recall (Psychology)
Holyoak, Keith J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
This study was based on that of Jorgensen and Kintsch (1973) regarding verification time and ease of imagery of sentences. The present study concluded that the results of Jorgensen and Kintsch do not distinguish the effects of rated imagery on reaction time from the effects of semantic relatedness and semantic complexity. Watkins, Michael J.; Tulving, Endel – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1975
This article reviews evidence of context effects in recognition, and of failure to recognize recallable words. (Editor)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Memory, Psychological Studies, Recall (Psychology)
Eysenck, Michael W. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1975
Subjects low or high in activation, as measured by Thayer's Activation-Deactiviation Adjective Check List, participated in two semantic memory tasks, one involving speed of recall and the other speed of recognition. (Editor)

Gagne, Robert M. – 1987
This paper defines a schema as a memory structure representing a general concept and its framework of associated concepts, and identifies the three processes by which learning can occur in individuals whose memories are schema-based, i.e., accretion, tuning, and restructuring. Ways in which schema might influence instructional design are then…

Haaga, David A. – 1987
State-dependent retention (SDR) refers to the tendency to recall something more easily when in the same state as when one first learned it. The most directly relevant evidence in favor of mood SDR has confounded matching of mood at learning and recall with matching of mood induction procedure. A study was conducted to test directly whether the use…

Bolla-Wilson, Karen; Bleecker, Margit L. – 1985
Although the accuracy of the diagnosis of cognitive impairment in the elderly depends on the appropriateness of the norms for the neuropsychological tests used, the importance of examining health status, native intelligence, and gender when attempting to describe cognitive changes of aging has received little attention. The Rey Auditory Verbal…

Attig, Mary S. – 1984
Recent theories in cognitive psychology have emphasized the role of capacity requirements in encoding tasks. To examine the notion that age-related differences in the recall performance reflect differences in cognitive capacity, 80 adults (40 undergraduates, and 40 senior citizens) recalled newspaper advertisements under free recall and cued…

Frierson, Henry T., Jr. – 1985
Suggestions are offered for applying learning techniques for a variety of learning situations. The approaches are applicable to learning medical school content as well as other advanced educational content. Ways to control external distractors are suggested, including a systematic approach to completing large tasks, such as writing a research…

Wilhite, Stephen C. – 1988
Two experiments investigated to what extent schema activation is involved in any facilitative effect that headings may have on multiple-choice test performance following the reading of a passage. In the first experiment, 1,116 college students read a 1,760-word passage on human sexuality with headings either present or absent. An analysis of the…

Reder, Lynne M.; And Others – 1982
Elderly subjects and college-age subjects were compared on the strategy used to answer a question based on information in memory. The two strategies studied were direct retrieval and plausibility. The first experiment tested the hypothesis that older subjects will rely on the plausibility strategy more than young subjects. A second experiment…

Stein, Debra K.; And Others – 1983
The ability of 20 learning disabled (LD) and 20 non-LD students (mean age of 9 years) to process temporal order information was assessed by employing a relative recency judgment task. Ss were administered lists composed of pictures of everyday objects and were then asked to indicate which item appeared latest on the list (that is, most recently).…

White, Richard T.; Gunstone, Richard F. – 1980
This paper details how memory protocols obtained in individual interviews may be translated to scores on several dimensions suggested by White. White's nine dimensions are: (1) extent, (2) precision, (3) internal consistency, (4) accord with reality, (5) variety of types of element, (6) variety of topics, (7) shape, (8) ratio of internal to…
