Peer reviewedJenkinson, Josephine C. – Intelligence, 1983
Speed of information processing was examined in relation to fluid and crystallized intelligence in sixth graders. Reaction time parameters (except slope) were negatively correlated with scores on intelligence tasks. Partial correlations failed to support any causal relationship between fluid and crystallized intelligence in either direction.…

Greenspan, Elaine – Executive Educator, 1984
Teaching study skills to students should be an important consideration in curriculum objectives. (MD)
Descriptors: Educational Environment, Elementary Secondary Education, Learning Theories, Memory
Peer reviewedKosslyn, Stephen Michael – Child Development, 1976
This is a developmental study of the effects, and role, of imagery in retrieving information from long-term memory. In two blocks of trails, first graders, fourth graders and adults determined whether or not various animals are characterized by various properties, first upon consultation of a visual image and then without imagery. (Author/SB)

Schulamn, Arthur I. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1976
Recognition memory has previously been shown to be better for unusual words than for common ones. Here it is seen that this word-frequency effect is reversed for extremely rare words. (Editor)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Memory, Psychological Studies
Penney, Catherine G. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1976
Three experiments were performed using a recognition probe procedure to test the subject's recognition of the order of two items from a dichotically presented list. (Editor)
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Flow Charts
Peer reviewedRatcliff, Roger; Murdock, Bennet B., Jr. – Psychological Review, 1976
A method of analyzing reaction time data in recognition memory is presented. A wide range of phenomena that any theory of recognition memory must explain is discussed. (Editor/RK)

Peer reviewedSinson, Janice C.; Wetherick, N. E. – Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 1975
Compared were the effects of lighting on the short term retention of color information in a total of 97 Down's Syndrome children. (DB)

Peer reviewedWalmsley, John B. – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1976
Sets up a model in which the functioning of the brain is seen in terms of a computer's operations; then considers the applications of such a model to foreign language teaching and learning, with particular emphasis on feedback and simulations. (KM)

Gentner, Donald R. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Describes a study of the recall of narrative prose. Serial structure at first influenced which elements were remembered, but as the Ss remembered more, the story grammar structure became the dominant influence over the elements remembered. (Author/RM)

Manelis, Leon – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Three experiments investigated a characteristic of the propositions that underlie sentences. For some of the sentences tested, the same concepts occurred repeatedly across the underlying propositions; for others, concepts were seldom repeated. Repetitions were shown to facilitate sentence processing. (Author/RM)

Peer reviewedFerguson, Robert P.; Bray, Norman W. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1976
The locus of facilitation due to rehearsal was investigated in three experiments with first-grade children. Several difference overt acquisition strategies in a four-item sequential memory task were compared, including ordered repetition, item repetition, item labeling, and free strategy conditions. (Author/SB)

Phye, Gary D. – 1998
Self-regulation components linked to academic problem-solving were studied. Cognitive process instruction on analogy problems was given to 63 undergraduates on a Monday. On Wednesday, problem-solving performance within the inductive reasoning domain was assessed with 30 Remote Associate Test (RAT) problems. On Friday, problem-solving performance…

Nwafor, Bernadette E. – 2001
This paper examines effective study strategies and how they can be used to enhance learning among African American college and university students, focusing on the importance of memory and metacognition in learning. The paper also explores factors that affect the use of these strategies and discusses how to overcome them. Effective study…

McAleese, Ray – 1998
This paper explains the process of creating and managing concept maps, using reflection as a focus for its argument. Section 1, What is a Concept Map?, highlights the background and definition of concept mapping, explains how maps signify virtual conceptual structures, looks at structural knowledge, provides an example of a concept map, and…
