Peer reviewedLenk, Peter – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1983
Graphical representations of nominations and citations of colleagues in seven scientific fields--information science, human systems management, future studies, general systems, topology and differential geometry, and polymer chemistry--are presented. Conomination analysis and cocitation analysis are compared as techniques to study structure of…
Descriptors: Citations (References), Cluster Analysis, Correlation, Data Analysis
Peer reviewedHamilton, Marlene A. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
The validity of a culture-specific modification/adaptation of the Remote Associates Test (RAT) made for Jamaica was examined with other measures of creativity in 11th grade students. Factor analysis showed the Jamaican RAT loading with the Circles Test on an apparent fluency factor of creativity. (Author/CM)
Descriptors: Association Measures, Creativity Tests, Cultural Influences, Culture Fair Tests
Peer reviewedMillimet, C. Raymond; Flume, Mary E. – Research in Higher Education, 1982
Because publicized minimum criteria for graduate school admission are rarely sufficient to gain entrance to the school of one's choice, a study was undertaken to estimate the actual admission standards to graduate school. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores accounted for about twice as much variance as grade point average. (Author/MLW)
Descriptors: Admission Criteria, College Admission, College Applicants, Factor Analysis
Peer reviewedSherwood, Robert D.; Westerback, Mary E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1983
Determined the validity of using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y) with preservice elementary teachers (N=103). Factor analysis results, along with high-interval consistency levels, support use of the instrument (previously used with Air Force recruits) with preservice elementary teachers. (JN)
Descriptors: Anxiety, Elementary School Teachers, Factor Analysis, Higher Education
Peer reviewedMeredith, Gerald M. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
The School of Architecture faculty posed the methodological problem to construct a scale of 10 items or less to reliably evaluate instruction at different levels of technical and artistic instruction. Among the first 10 ordered items were: "The instructor did a good job" and "The course was worthwhile." (CM)
Descriptors: Architectural Education, Factor Analysis, Higher Education, Student Evaluation of Teacher Performance
Peer reviewedPowers, Stephen; Crowder, Christopher – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The factorial structure of the California Achievement Test subtests appears to consist of only one common factor in each grade. This study indicates that there is considerable overlap among the subtests and that there is minimal support for the use of subtest scores as measures of independent constructs. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, Elementary Education, Factor Analysis, Factor Structure
Peer reviewedHoyt, Danny R.; Creech, James C. – Journal of Gerontology, 1983
Examined the Life Satisfaction Index A (LSIA) by factor analytic techniques. Although the results indicated a strong need for caution, there was evidence of an alternative interpretation of the LSIA that has a degree of consistency across racial and gender categories. These findings raise implicit questions about prior research. (Author/JAC)
Descriptors: Adjustment (to Environment), Affective Measures, Factor Analysis, Individual Differences
Peer reviewedBing, Sally B. – Instructional Science, 1982
Evaluates the effect of question type (rote, conceptual) and adjunct question response mode (multiple choice, short answer) on rote and conceptual learning outcomes of 98 undergraduate high and low ability readers. Results indicate rote adjunct questions are more helpful to readers and high reading ability students demonstrate better test…
Descriptors: Aptitude Treatment Interaction, Concept Formation, Factor Analysis, Higher Education
Peer reviewedReynolds, Cecil R.; Paget, Kathleen D. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1981
Responses to the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS) were factor analyzed with children (N=4972) between 6 and 19 years. Three anxiety factors emerged that were consistent with earlier studies. Factor structure of the RCMAS is for the most part invariant with regard to race and sex. (Author)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Affective Measures, Anxiety, Children
Peer reviewedBronstein-Burrows, Phyllis – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1981
Considers whether categories of parent behavior (i.e., egalitarian warmth, authoritarian hostility, autonomy, and intrusive over-involvement) consistently appear as polar opposites in a two-dimensional structure, investigating whether these categories transcend methodological differences, cultural boundaries, and the passage of time. The relevance…
Descriptors: Audiotape Recordings, Behavior Patterns, Child Rearing, Factor Analysis
Peer reviewedHolley, Charles D.; Dansereau, Donald F. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1980
A two-step control procedure is demonstrated in which the experimenter first identifies the most appropriate control group for the investigation and then employs multiple covariates to adjust the dependent measure(s) for these sources of error. This procedure is demonstrated in a learning strategy experiment. (GK)
Descriptors: Analysis of Covariance, Control Groups, Factor Analysis, Higher Education
Peer reviewedVelicer, Wayne F.; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1982
Factor analysis, image analysis, and principal component analysis are compared with respect to the factor patterns they would produce under various conditions. The general conclusion that is reached is that the three methods produce results that are equivalent. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Data Analysis, Factor Analysis, Goodness of Fit
Peer reviewedHagglund, Gosta – Psychometrika, 1982
Three alternative estimation procedures for factor analysis based on the instrumental variables method are presented. Least squares estimation procedures are compared to maximum likelihood procedures. The conclusion, based on the data used in this study, is that two of the procedures seem to work well. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics), Factor Analysis
Peer reviewedWalters, Lynda Henley; Klein, Alice E. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
Two scales were submitted together for factor analyses in order to determine the extent to which the dimensions of locus of control and anomie were related from the perspective of adolescents. It was concluded that the instruments measure different constructs and are factorially valid when considered together. (Author/AL)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Factor Analysis, Locus of Control, Measures (Individuals)
Peer reviewedRatliff, Elyse Sutherland; Conley, James – Social Behavior and Personality, 1981
Investigated the structure of sex role self-descriptors. Factor analyzed responses of female and male undergraduates to the Bem Sex Role Inventory. Seven factors emerged: personal warmth, social dominance, autonomy, affect, masculinity-feminity, vulnerability, and responsibility. Results support a multidimensional conception of…
