A factor analysis of a questionnaire investigating alienation among ninth and tenth graders is presented. Three factors--Personal Incapacity, Cultural Estrangement, and Guidelessness--were identified and analyzed. Individual items within the Knower Speech Experience Inventory were studied to discover what specific communication-related experiences distinguish effective from poor public speakers in a basic college level speech communication course.
