Peer reviewedLinn, Marcia C. – Science and Children, 1987
Describes the use of a microcomputer-based laboratory (MBL) in teaching the concepts of heat and temperature to eighth grade students. Discusses the advantages of being able to instantly display the results of their experimentation with the use of temperature and light probes, and heat pulsors. (TW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics, Computer Uses in Education, Concept Formation
Physiologist, 1987
Contains abstracts of presented papers which deal with teaching materials and methods in physiology. Includes papers on preconceptual notions in physiology, somatosensory activity recorded in the dorsal root ganglion of the bull frog, and the use of the Apple Macintosh microcomputer in teaching human anatomy and physiology. (TW)
Descriptors: Animals, College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics
Peer reviewedDavis, Larry P.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1987
Describes a personalized method of instruction being used in junior-level physical chemistry classes which uses computer-aided instruction (CAI) and computer-managed instruction (CMI). Claims this results in more instructor-student interaction, better use of classroom time, and better scores on standardized examinations. (TW)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Chemistry, College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction
Yueh, Jei-show; Alessi, Stephen M. – Journal of Computer-Based Instruction, 1988
This study investigated the effect of reward structure and group ability composition on small group computer-assisted instruction. Junior high school students practiced algebra in mixed-ability or uniform-ability groups, and rewards were based on individual performance, group performance, or a combination of both. (29 references) (Author/LRW)
Descriptors: Ability Grouping, Achievement Tests, Algebra, Analysis of Variance
Peer reviewedWoerner, Janet J. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1988
Reviews the goals of laboratory education as identified by the National Science Teachers Association. Describes an Apple II system for the lab. Concentrates on hardware and connections. Stresses the advantages of student-microcomputer interaction in the laboratory setting. (CW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Literacy, Computer Uses in Education, Computers
Collis, Betty – Computing Teacher, 1988
Summarizes five studies related to computerized language education: (1) speech synthesizers and children's writing abilities; (2) comparison of Writing to Read program and traditional teaching; (3) evaluation of Writing to Read program; (4) deaf adolescents and sentence construction; and (5) student attitudes toward writing with computers vs.…

Peer reviewedErnest, Paul – Mathematics in School, 1988
Argues that Turtle Geometry has a great deal to offer mathematics teaching and learning. Suggests that it helps develop general problem-solving strategies and encourages new approaches to teaching and learning. (PK)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Uses in Education
Hill, Jack D., Jr. – Technological Horizons in Education, 1987
Provides an overview of a project designed to develop a comprehensive, state-mandated program to reduce teacher paperwork through the use of microcomputers. Describes the survey conducted prior to developing the program, a pilot test, and the implementation of an acquisition plan for hardware and software. (TW)
Descriptors: Administrative Change, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Software
Schiffman, Shirl S. – Educational Technology, 1986
This first of two articles presents eight examples of what software infusion (SI) looks like in actual practice in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms and learning laboratories. An analysis of SI characteristics demonstrated in the examples is presented to bring the definition of SI into focus. (MBR)
Descriptors: Classroom Techniques, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Computer Software
Peer reviewedHoelscher, Karen – Computers in the Schools, 1986
Describes the Minnesota Education Computing Corporation (MECC) Computing and Information Collection, a collection of software products for students in grades 4-12. These products are designed to support individual course content objectives and introduce and practice information literacy skills. Curriculum applications in language arts,…
Descriptors: Cognitive Style, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics, Database Management Systems
Peer reviewedSinger, George; And Others – Journal of Special Education Technology, 1986
Computer assisted video instruction (CAVI) was tested as a way to improve four teaching behaviors of a paraprofessional who was responsible for the instruction of a deaf-blind, severely retarded six-year-old student in a rural school. Direct observation revealed that CAVI was effective in modifying three of the target behaviors. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Case Studies, Computer Assisted Instruction, Deaf Blind, Individual Instruction
Technological Horizons in Education, 1986
Discusses the use of laserdiscs and interactive video technology in an earth science classroom. Delineates the basic equipment needed for a laserdisc workstation, along with a software authoring system. Describes the development and use of a software program called Mission Earth, which contains four lessons on astronomoy. (TW)
