Peer reviewedHoehn, Larry – Mathematics Teacher, 1991
Presented is an example of a typical geometry theorem which can be used to create geometry test questions and geometry contest questions. Thirteen problems are suggested. (CW)

Peer reviewedChandler, Donald G.; Brosnan, Patricia A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1995
Percentages of mathematics content for 7 text series, grades 1-8, were compared with percentages on the Ohio Ninth Grade Proficiency Test. Ratios of text:test percentages were arithmetic (63:30), measurement (10:25), geometry (12:15), data analysis (11:15), and algebra (4:15). Implications are discussed. (MSD)
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, Content Analysis, Elementary School Mathematics, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedBloxom, Bruce; And Others – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 1995
Develops and evaluates the linkage of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery to the mathematics scale of the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The accuracy of the proficiency distribution estimated from the projection was close to the accuracy of the distribution estimated from the large scale assessment. (SLD)
Descriptors: Educational Assessment, Estimation (Mathematics), Evaluation Methods, Mathematics Tests
Peer reviewedClark, H. Clifford; Nelson, Marvin N. – Middle School Journal, 1993
Describes six informal diagnostic strategies (paired learning, red dot, chalkboard analysis, small-group pretesting and reteaching, answer key, and calculator computation checks) designed to help middle school students gain independence through cooperative learning activities. Corrective feedback is provided through peer discussion, limited…

Peer reviewedBower, Gordon H. – Psychological Review, 1994
The article by W. K. Estes marks a turning point in the mathematical learning theory movement. The central constructs were stimulus variability, stimulus sampling, and stimulus response association by contiguity, in a framework enabling prediction of response probability and latency. (SLD)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Learning Theories, Mathematics, Mathematics Tests
Burns, Marilyn – Writing Notebook: Creative Word Processing in the Classroom, 1991
Discusses the hazards of using timed mathematics tests in hopes of helping children learn basic math facts. Provides samples of children's writing which discuss their feeling about timed tests. Presents one teacher's idea of combining her students' thinking about math with writing haiku poetry. (MG)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Mathematics Instruction, Mathematics Skills, Mathematics Tests
Rigol, Gretchen W. – College Board Review, 1991
The College Entrance Examination Board has not permitted calculator use on the Scholastic Aptitude Test because of unresolved concerns about equity, implications for test content, and logistical and security issues. Those issues no longer seem insurmountable, and significant changes are being introduced on many tests. (MSE)
Descriptors: Calculators, Cheating, College Entrance Examinations, Higher Education
McConaghy, Tom – Phi Delta Kappan, 1998
In the grade 12 portion of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study, Canadian students performed better than other participating G-8 countries. In fact, Canada scored consistently above the international mean for all three age groups tested. However, some educators and reformers have expressed dissatisfaction with these results. (MLH)

Peer reviewedTaylor, Catherine S. – Educational Assessment, 1998
Investigated item-by-item, holistic, and "trait" scoring with three mathematics performance-based tasks completed by 53 to 79 junior high and senior high school students per task. Results suggest that holistic scoring and item-by-item scoring methods provide similar information, but that trait score tapped into different aspects of…

Peer reviewedVan de Rijt, B. A. M.; Pennings, A. H.; Van Luit, J. E. H. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1999
Constructed the Utrecht Early Mathematical Competence Scales to assess the development of mathematical competence in children ages 4 to 7 years using responses from 823 children. Results from the completed 80-item test show considerable differences in mathematical competence at each grade and age level. (SLD)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Instructional Program Divisions, Mathematics Skills, Mathematics Tests
Peer reviewedHowie, S. J.; Marsh, T. A.; Allummoottil, J.; Glencross, M.; Deliwe, C.; Hughes, C. A. – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 2000
Explores mathematics results for seventh and eighth graders in South Africa on the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) test. Discusses reasons for South African students' relatively low performance by analyzing student background factors. Suggests research needs to study mathematics performance factors in more detail. (SLD)

Engec, Necati – Research in the Schools, 1999
Studied the impact of aberrant response behaviors, such as guessing, sleeping, and cheating, on ability parameter estimates in the Rasch model. Results from a mathematics test administered to 5,200 fourth and sixth graders indicate that the invariance properties of the Rasch model ability estimates increase when person-fit statistics are larger…

Madsen, Ann L.; And Others – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1995
Comparison of pre- and posttest scores in mathematics computation of 2 classes of (n=91) ninth-grade students, 1 class emphasizing drill and practice and the other focusing on learning concepts, found the mean grade equivalent score for computation of the concept class increased more than 2 years and these students attempted to answer more…

Peer reviewedByrnes, James P.; Hong, Li; Xing, Shaoying – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1997
Presents a study in which Chinese students were given items from the math subtest of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) which were found to produce the largest gender differences in American students. Concludes that, consistent with differential coursework view but contrary to several others, results revealed no difference in performance on the…

Evens, Hilary; Houssart, Jenny – Educational Research, 2004
This paper utilizes Toulmin's original framework to analyse over 400 answers given by 11-year-olds to a question on a written mathematics test. The question required children to say whether a given statement is true and give a written explanation. Categorizations of answers are developed from the data and examined, suggesting that many children…
