Muthen, Bengt – Psychometrika, 1978
A new method--similar to Christoffersson's--for the factor analysis of dichotomous variables uses information from the first and second order proportions to fit a multiple factor model. The estimation is considerably simplified. Items from Rotter's locus of control inventory are included. (Author/JKS)

Newman, Isadore; Fraas, John – Multiple Linear Regression Viewpoints, 1979
Issues in the application of multiple regression analysis as a data analytic tool are discussed at some length. Included are discussions on component regression, factor regression, ridge regression, and systems of equations. (JKS)
Descriptors: Correlation, Factor Analysis, Multiple Regression Analysis, Research Design

Monsell, Stephen – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1981
Provides an introduction to research on the basic components of cognitive skill. Perceptual processing and representation, the components of long- and short-term memory, and the nature of attention, mental performance, and consciousness are discussed. A 101-item reference list is provided. (JL)

Bollen, Kenneth A.; Ward, Sally – Sociological Methods and Research, 1979
Three different uses of ratio variables in aggregate data analysis are discussed: (1) as measures of theoretical concepts, (2) as a means to control an extraneous factor, and (3) as a correction for heteroscedasticity. Alternatives to ratios for each of these cases are discussed and evaluated. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Correlation, Multiple Regression Analysis, Predictor Variables, Ratios (Mathematics)
White, Roberta D. – ABCA Bulletin, 1980
Reports on a business communication assignment to conduct an in-depth study of a corporation. The assignment concludes with a formal report of the students' findings centering on a study of the company's annual report. (TJ)

Hellige, Joseph B. – Educational Communication and Technology: A Journal of Theory, Research, and Development, 1980
Reviews the major methods of investigation used in cerebral hemispheric research, considers some of the important conceptual issues confronting contemporary cerebral laterality research, examines the possible role of interhemispheric cooperation in complex cognitive activities, and discusses implications for instructional research and development.…

Brown, Robert D.; Braskamp, Larry A. – New Directions for Program Evaluation, 1980
The 50-item Utilization Enhancement Checklist involves: determining evaluator role; understanding organizational context; planning; conducting the evaluation; and communicating evaluative information. The checklist is presented as a summary of the preceding nine articles. (Available from: Jossey-Bass, Inc., 433 California St., San Francisco, CA…

Shine, Lester C. II – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
When reporting results, researchers must not change predetermined significance levels. Such attempts to make results more significant are statistically inaccurate, illogical, and unethical. American Psychological Association standards for reporting significance should be more explicit. (CP)

Richards, Colin – Forum for the Discussion of New Trends in Education, 1979
The author reviews the 1978 report, "Primary Education in England: A Survey by HM Inspectors of Schools." (SJL)

Agresti, Alan; And Others – Psychometrika, 1979
A procedure for approximating attained significance levels of exact conditional tests is proposed. The procedure utilizes a sampling from the null distribution of tables having the same marginal frequencies as the observed tables. (Author/JKS)

Green, Rex S.; Bentler, Peter M. – Psychometrika, 1979
Two revisions of computer-interactive multidimensional scaling data selection procedures are presented. One revision--based on randomly ordering the list of stimuli--improves the estimates of the multidimensional scaling parameters and the other permits more efficient data designs. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Data Analysis, Multidimensional Scaling, Online Systems

Goodman, Leo A. – Psychometrika, 1979
An iterative procedure to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of latent structure analysis parameters is described. The procedure is defended against a critic (EJ 187 975) who contended that it would permit unacceptable estimates. (JKS)
