A method, involving the plotting of scores on a grid, was developed for use in comparing scores from the Gottschalk-Gleser content analysis scales, which have different Black and White norms. Reports the preferences and attitudes held by English- speaking primary school children in Hawaii toward Hawaiian Creole English (HCE) and Standard English (SE). Refutes the theory that indirect requests are ambiguous. Arguments for it are examined and an attempt is made to expose the weaknesses in the kinds of tests generally used to detect "illocutionary" ambiguity.
