Peer reviewedAshton, Roderick; White, Kenneth D. – British Journal of Psychology, 1980
When scores from a modified (modification affecting response bias) Sheehan/Betts imagery questionnaire were reanalyzed, previous findings--that females report more vivid imagery than males--were not confirmed. It is argued that previously reported sex differences may be artificial in so far as imagery vividness scores are concerned. (Author/KC)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Imagery, Response Style (Tests), Sex Differences

The paper discusses some problems in using achievement tests with hearing impaired students and offers some general suggestions for school testing programs. (PHR)
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, Elementary Secondary Education, Hearing Impairments, Test Interpretation
Farr, Roger – Instructor, 1980
Responding to critics of testing, the author presents an argument in its favor--that testing is one of the ways in which a teacher may gather information necessary for student monitoring and instructional decision-making. (SJL)
Descriptors: Data Collection, Decision Making, Diagnostic Teaching, Elementary Education
Peer reviewedSimmons, Dale D. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Findings indicated that a sense of meaning in living is associated with a differential ability to make value judgments about the self but not about the external world, and with present and anticipated future satisfaction, but not with judged quality of past life. (Author)
Descriptors: Competence, Correlation, Individual Characteristics, Intelligence
Peer reviewedAndrasik, Frank; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1981
Reading grade levels were obtained for 11 commonly employed self-report assertion inventories by use of the Flesch Reading Ease Formula. Directions for the inventories ranged from the seventh-grade to college graduate reading grade level. Inventory items were more readable, with scores ranging from the seventh- to the twelfth-grade level. (Author)

Compares motor and cognitive skills of learning disabled and normal boys on the Modified Lincoln-Oberetsky Motor Development Scale and on the WISC-R Vocabulary and Block Design subtests. Suggests a common factor relating to perceptual-motor coordination and efficiency may be involved on the Lincoln-Oberetsky and Block Design subtest for young…

The responses of 322 beginning first graders to the six subtests of the Metropolitan Readiness Test were factor analyzed. A single General Readiness factor appeared to best describe the instrument. Implications for use of the Metropolitan Readiness Test are briefly discussed. (Author)
Descriptors: Factor Structure, Grade 1, Predictive Validity, Primary Education
Peer reviewedWelch, Wayne W. – School Science and Mathematics, 1980
This paper hypothesized an explanation for declining achievement scores in science, centering a reduction in time and emphasis devoted to cognitive activities. Analysis of data did not produce definitive results, but indicated a need for further study. (MK)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Educational Research, Secondary Education, Secondary School Mathematics
Peer reviewedWilcox, Rand R. – Psychometrika, 1979
The problem of determining an optimal passing score for a mastery test is discussed, when the purpose of the test is to predict success on an external criterion. For the case of constant losses for the two possible error types, a method for determining passing scores is derived. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Criterion Referenced Tests, Cutting Scores, Mastery Tests, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedJansen, David G.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
Scores from the Comrey Personality Scales were related to scores from the Personal Orientation Dimension for a sample of alcoholic inpatients. Results supported the findings of an earlier study and helped to clarify the construct validity of the instruments. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedPenfield, Douglas A.; Sachdeva, Darshan – Journal of Experimental Education, 1976
The absolute normal scores test is described as a test for the symmetry of a distribution of scores about a location parameter. The test is compared to the sign test and the Wilcoxon test as an alternative to the "t"-test. (Editor/RK)

Peer reviewedTaylor, James B.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1976
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) can be viewed as communicating information about the self to a tester or institution. Descriptors: Certification, Decision Making, Licensing Examinations (Professions), Performance Based Assessment
Peer reviewedKane, Michael – Applied Measurement in Education, 1996
This overview of the role of error and tolerance for error in measurement asserts that the generic precision associated with a measurement procedure is defined as the root mean square error, or standard error, in some relevant population. This view of precision is explored in several applications of measurement. (SLD)
