The Values and Benefits of Independent Boarding Schools
Quebec, Jeffrey Robert
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
The benefits of attending an independent boarding school have not been adequately identified in order to promote them to prospective students and their families. "The Values and Benefits of Independent Boarding Schools" is an action research study that sought to examine and explore the specific values and benefits of independent boarding schools, which can be used to contribute to making a positive impact by helping a wider, broader, and more diverse audience learn about the strengths of these schools. The specific values and benefits are defined as the areas where students can gain in their development from attending an independent boarding school. This action research study was conducted through qualitative methods. Participants of this study consisted of constituents of independent boarding schools, as they offered a wealth of knowledge and experience which greatly contributed to this action research study. These stakeholders shared their personal experiences with independent boarding schools. The acquired data was collected from these participants in both Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 through the use of interviews, a focus group, surveys, and content discussions. Knowledge generated has been presented to inform prospective students and their families about independent boarding schools, in seeking to contribute to making a positive impact by helping a wider, broader, and more diverse audience learn about the strengths of these schools. Additionally, a new online website (https://www.WhyBoardingSchool.com) has been created in order to promote the research data.
