Exploring Special Education Paraprofessional Stress and Resilience
Samantha Wallin
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
This qualitative multiple case study aimed to understand how special education paraprofessionals, who work with students with low-incidence disabilities, experience stress and resilience through a compassion fatigue conceptual lens. I explored paraprofessional perspectives on stress factors relevant to workload and student challenges, along with their experiences of resilience relevant to professional development opportunities. Stress and burnout are prevalent in special education, and understanding the factors that may influence paraprofessional job-related stress and self-efficacy is essential and needed. More research on this topic aimed to fill a research gap and bolster the supports that connect the psychological well-being of paraprofessionals with their close work with students with complex academic, social, and behavioral needs. Research information gained from my study not only supports and advocates for paraprofessional needs but also aids the work of special educators, administrators, and family members seeking to educate students with low-incidence disabilities successfully.
