Research and literature validate a disconnect between STEM graduates' classroom-acquired knowledge and skills versus those needed to perform tasks in the workplace. Some contend that pedagogical and curricular developments focus on discipline-specific content rather than soft skills, willingness to learn, flexibility, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, fortitude, and leadership. Employers expect graduates to demonstrate aptitude in systems design thinking, technology skills, critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and project management. Since STEM graduates lack adequate competencies in adaptability, managing uncertainty, and responding to innovation, they are unable to transition successfully from the classroom to the workplace. This study provides actionable data to promote STEM graduate employability through academic-STEM industry partnerships.
