Offered as an independent, elective, one-credit course available to second-year pharmacy students, a life support course has been taught at the University of Nebraska Medical Center by instructors certified by the American Heart Association. This paper presents a critical review of research which has been offered in support of training programs that focus on Human Relations Development as proposed by Robert Carkhuff. This empirical study tested the effects of a systematically-designed training program to help medical students develop empathetic responses to patients and to attend not just to disease symptoms. Results indicate the success of the program. (Editor/LBH)

This model deals with change in student's self-concept over a period of instruction in communication intervention. No consistent evidence was found that communication intervention had impact on changing one's self-concept. Self-awareness should be taught as a separate course from communication. (MFD)
