Abkarian, G. G. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1987
Evaluation of classification skills of 88 unimpaired children (grades K, 2, 4, and 6) were evaluated using the Iconic-Symbolic test (IS) of the Muma Assessment Program and follow-up interviews. Results found little relationship between the rationales the children reported using and the classification criteria presumed by the IS procedure. (DB)

Garcia, Jane Mertz; Stick, Sheldon L. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1986
A 20-item Piagetian-type sorting task was presented to 12 unilaterally brain-injured adult patients and 12 non-injured controls. The left hemisphere brain-injured subjects and the controls showed preferences for the features of shape and texture. In contrast, the right hemisphere brain-injured subjects preferred the feature of size. (Author)

Hook, Donald D. – IRAL, 1986
Establishes two categories of numbers: (1) relatively frequent numbers and (2) relatively infrequent numbers. The numbers in the first group are manipulated by people and depend, at least to some degree, on memorization; those in the second group are essentially machine inputs. Examples of the first group are examined. (SED)

Aitchison, Jean – Journal of Documentation, 1986
Describes features of Bliss Bibliographic Classification (BC2) that make it thesaurus-compatible and a source for thesaurus compilers: facet analysis, terminology source, thesaural relationship source, and updating ease. Problems with using BC2 as a thesaurus source are also considered, and two thesauri based on BC2 are described. (MBR)

LaVan, Helen; And Others – Public Personnel Management, 1987
The study compares public sector and private sector comparable worth litigation. Ungerer, Judy A.; Sigman, Marian – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1987
Assessment of category knowledge and receptive language skills of 16 autistic (3-6 years old), mentally retarded, and normal children indicated that the autistic children's knowledge of function, form, and color categories was comparable to that of the mental-age-matched mentally retarded and normal comparison groups. (Author/DB)

Cecchini, Arnaldo; Frisenna, Adriana – Simulation/Games for Learning, 1987
Reviews the problems of classifying gaming techniques and suggests a heuristic approach as one solution. Definitions of simulation, models, role, and game and play are discussed to help develop a classification based on a technique called gaming simulation. (Author/LRW)

Qualls, Sara Honn; Czirr, Ruth – Gerontologist, 1988
Examines geriatric health teams, discussing four dimensions of models for professional functioning (logic of assessment, focus of efforts, locus of responsibility, and pace of action) and three dimensions of models for team functioning (focus of attention, decision-making style, and beliefs about interprofessional dependence). (Author/NB)

Gelman, Susan A.; O'Reilly, Anne Watson – Child Development, 1988
In two studies, preschoolers and second graders were tested on their understanding that members of a category have similar parts. Children in both studies drew many inferences concerning the internal structure of objects in basic-level categories. Suggests that preschool children assume that basic-level categories share internal parts. (RJC)

Markman, Ellen M.; Wachtel, Gwyn F. – Cognitive Psychology, 1988
Six studies, with 174 three-year-olds in California, investigated whether children's knowledge of a label for an object excluded the possibility that they would accept another label for the object. Results indicate that mutual exclusivity motivates children to learn terms for attributes, substances, parts, and objects. (TJH)

Egghe, L. – Information Processing and Management, 1988
Presents a mathematical theory that can be used to define concentration places of objects within unordered classes. The application to research on the evolution of journals and subject areas is illustrated, and an online method of calculating concentration evolution is described. (1 references) (CLB)
