Examined the linkage between psychological well-being and marital status in 2,500 men. Results indicated little difference in psychological well-being before or after divorce/separation, suggesting that the relationship between marital status and well-being is not necessarily causal. (JAC)

Compared sex role attributes of male alcoholic veterans to those of 81 nonalcoholic veterans and 386 college students. Results showed male alcoholics were sex-typed more frequently as feminine than masculine. Results were interpreted as a consequence, not a cause of the disorder and were considered reversible with sustained sobriety. (JAC)

Administered the Beck Hopelessness Scale to alcoholic (N=20) and heroin-addicted (N=20) women. Results indicated that although both groups expressed comparable levels of overall hopelessness, alcoholic women anticipated more success and better lives in the next 10 years than did the heroin-dependent women.
