Hull, Peter – Journal of Biological Education, 1978
Describes an interactive computer program which can be used by students to construct adaptive landscapes of two types as an illustration of the expected effects of selection. Simulates effects of selection on populations of this type and changes of gene frequency can be plotted on the same contour map. (Author/MA)

Alexander, Richard D. – American Biology Teacher, 1978
Argues that the important issue is not whether students are exposed to wrong ideas, but rather whether each has been taught how, and given the freedom to test new ideas, evaluate them, and respond appropriately. The question of teaching evolution, creation, or both is then trivial by comparison. (Author/MA)

Goldschmidt Millicent C.; Whitt, Dixie – American Biology Teacher, 1978
A broad range of present microbiological work is discussed in order to indicate the many possible careers now open in microbiology. Some areas are immunology, environmental microbiology, agricultural, industrial, and food microbiology, and space microbiology. An employment outlook is also given. (MDR)

Lamb, Dolores A.; Shaw Margery W. – American Biology Teacher, 1978
Some of the work of a modern medical geneticist is described. Also included is an employment outlook summary in medical genetics. (MDR)

Lawson, William B. – Black Books Bulletin, 1976
Argues that awareness of neuro-biology is necessary to insure accountability and to remain cognizant of the developing technology in this area, whose impact on the black community is increasing. It is up to the community and to black professionals to insure accountability, since scientists (and certainly those people who utilize this technology)…

Fisher, K. M.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1977
Compares student achievement in an upper-division college introductory course taught by the video-autotutorial method with that in two comparable courses taught by the lecture-discussion method. Pre-post tests of 623 students reveal that video-autotutorial students outperform lecture/discussion participants at all ability levels and that in…

Arnold, L. Eugene – School Psychology Digest, 1976
Hyperactivity refers to a constellation of symptoms, any combination of which may be present in a given child, and also to a variety of factors, such as: impulsiveness, distractability, irritability, explosiveness, immaturity, underachievement (despite normal intelligence), and visual-motor dysfunction. Preventive measures must take into account…

Zubin, Joseph; Spring, Bonnie – Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 1977
Although descriptive and etiological approaches to psychopathology have made notable advances, they seem to have reached a plateau. After reviewing the six approaches to etiology that now preempt the field--ecological, developmental, learning, genetic, internal environment, and neurophysiological models--a second-order model, vulnerability, is…

Exceptional Parent, 1987
Information is presented on a number of tests used in genetic counseling (e.g., genetic evaluation, chromosome evaluation, consideration of multifactorial conditions, prenatal testing, and chorionic villus sampling) which help parents with one disabled child make family planning decisions. (CB)
Descriptors: Congenital Impairments, Decision Making, Disabilities, Family Planning
Murray, James D. – Scientific American, 1988
Discusses a single pattern formation mechanism that could underlie the wide variety of animal coat markings found in nature. Presents the results of a mathematical model for how these patterns may be generated in the course of embryonic development. (CW)

Mitchell, James E.; Eckert, Elke D. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1987
Describes the increasing prevalence of anorexia nervosa and bulimia in many industrialized societies, and their association with significant morbidity and mortality. Discusses the genetic risks for the development of anorexia nervosa, and treatment strategies. Of these, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, particularly those incorporating…

Lachiewicz, Ave M.; And Others – American Journal of Mental Retardation, 1987
Retrospective longitudinal data on 21 boys with the fragile X syndrome were analyzed. Results indicated that 13 of the boys showed a significant decline in intelligence quotient at retest, suggesting that while young boys with this syndrome may be only mildly retarded, adults are usually moderately to severely retarded. (Author/DB)

Perez-Ortin, J. E.; And Others – Biochemical Education, 1988
Suggests a new experiment to study the genetic material of eukaryotes. It is based on the rapid growth and interest of the research on chromatin. (TW)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, College Science, DNA, Genetics
Kumpfer, Karol L.; DeMarsh, Joseph – Journal of Children in Contemporary Society, 1985
Discusses the following in relation to their predictability to future drug abuse in youth: (1) susceptibility of children of chemically dependent parents; (2) genetic transmutation; (3) family structure and management; (4) socialization; and (5) cognitive family characteristics. (Author/LHW)

Day, M. J.; And Others – Journal of Biological Education, 1985
An interactive computer program in microbial genetics is described. The simulation allows students to work at their own pace and develop understanding of microbial techniques as they choose donor bacterial strains, specify selective media, and interact with demonstration experiments. Sample questions and outputs are included. (DH)
