Gordon, Robert M. – English Journal, 1980
The Dale-Chall Readability Formula and the Fry Readability Graph were used to analyze passages of Plato's "Parmenides," a notoriously difficult literary piece. The readability levels of the text ranged from fourth to eighth grade (Dale-Chall) and from sixth to tenth grade (Fry), indicating the limitations of the readability tests. (DF)

Zwick, Rebecca – Psychometrika, 1988
Properties of dichotomous Guttman-scalable items are described. Both the elements and eigenvalues of the Pearson correlation matrix of such items can be expressed as simple functions of the number of items if the score distribution is uniform and there is an equal number of items at each difficulty level. (SLD)

Avery, Susan J. – Music Educators Journal, 2004
Community involvement in music making is a time-honored tradition that is experiencing a joyful resurgence. The word "community" can mean both an area of geography as well as a group of people coming together with a sense of purpose. In creating a community chorus, a key to its success is to place more emphasis on the second aspect. Go beyond…

Huang, Liqiang; Pashler, Harold – Cognition, 2005
When a visual search task is very difficult (as when a small feature difference defines the target), even detection of a unique element may be substantially slowed by increases in display set size. This has been attributed to the influence of attentional capacity limits. We examined the influence of attentional capacity limits on three kinds of…

Mid-Atlantic Equity Center, 2009
Research on teaching and learning indicates that all students should be provided with programs, services, and teachers that engage them in rigorous academic work and promote deep disciplinary knowledge and higher order thinking skills (Walqui, 2006; Sanders & Rivers, 1996). Despite research findings on the importance of high quality teachers…

Jenkinson, Jodie – Electronic Journal of e-Learning, 2009
In many academic areas, students' success depends upon their ability to envision and manipulate complex multidimensional information spaces. Fields in which students struggle with mastering these types of representations include (but are by no means limited to) mathematics, science, medicine, and engineering. There has been some educational…

Wolf, Mikyung Kim; Leon, Seth – Educational Assessment, 2009
The purpose of the present study is to examine the language characteristics of a few states' large-scale assessments of mathematics and science and investigate whether the language demands of the items are associated with the degree of differential item functioning (DIF) for English language learner (ELL) students. A total of 542 items from 11…

Wood, Robert E.; Beckmann, Jens F.; Birney, Damian P. – Education & Training, 2009
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to consider how simulations are increasingly used in training programs for the development of skills such as leadership. Gainsburg, Julie – Teacher Education Quarterly, 2009
Training and investing teachers at all career levels in student-centered practices is widely recognized as a significant challenge. Various studies document the failure of student-centered teaching practices to take hold in K-12 mathematics classrooms in significant ways, including collaborative work; problems that are cognitively demanding or…

Colonnesi, Cristina; Koops, Willem; Meerum Terwogt, Mark – Infant and Child Development, 2008
The present study examined two key aspects of young children's ability to explain human behaviour in a mentalistic way. First, we explored desires that are of a level of difficulty comparable with that of false beliefs. For this purpose, the so-called "alternative desires" were created. Second, we examined how children's psychological…

Nehm, Ross H.; Schonfeld, Irvin Sam – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 2008
Growing recognition of the central importance of fostering an in-depth understanding of natural selection has, surprisingly, failed to stimulate work on the development and rigorous evaluation of instruments that measure knowledge of it. We used three different methodological tools, the Conceptual Inventory of Natural Selection (CINS), a modified…
