The distributional characteristics of Kaiser's Measure of Sampling Adequacy (MSA) were investigated in sample matrices generated from multivariate normal populations of specified correlation levels. Systematic variation of sample size and number of variables revealed the overall MSA to be most influenced by the number of variables. (Author/JKS)

The stability of factor structure of an instrument measuring managerial attitudes toward blacks in the working environment was investigated. Results indicated that the factor structure did not remain invariant over administrations to three different samples of managers. One group of subjects responded to an anxiety battery according to their general feelings and then according to their feeling under anxiety-related simulations. Analytical comparisons are made of four commonly available packaged computer programs which perform principal-axis factor analysis. The four programs: Statistical Analysis System, Data-Text, Biomedical Computer Programs, and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences were compared by running each program with the same data set. An iterative process is proposed for obtaining an orthogonal simple structure solution. At each iteration, a target matrix is constructed such that the relative contributions of the target majorize the original ones, factor by factor. Two alternating least squares algorithms are presented for the simultaneous components analysis method of R. E. Millsap and W. Meredith (1988). These methods, one for small data sets and one for large data sets, can indicate whether or not a global optimum for the problem has been attained. (SLD)

The power of the likelihood ratio test in multiple group confirmatory factor analysis under partial measurement invariance was studied in a population study with a six-variable, two-factor model where a specification error existed for one group. With reference to the authors' previous paper (1985), it is proposed that loglinear analysis can be used to detect interactions in a multiway contingency table and explore the form of these interactions with correspondence analysis. The identification of two factors when one factor is expected is an artifact caused by using factor analysis on data that would be more appropriately analyzed with a unidimensional unfolding model. A class of oblique rotation procedures is proposed to rotate a pattern matrix so that it optimally resembles a matrix that has an exact simple pattern. It is demonstrated that the method can recover relatively complex simple structures where other simple structure rotation techniques fail. (SLD)
