Facilitating Listening Skills in Children Who Are Visually Impaired with Additional Disabilities or Deafblindness
Deborah Chen1; Maurice Belote2
Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, v119 n3 p224-229 2025
When children have visual impairments and additional disabilities, learning to listen and understanding what is heard are essential for language, literacy, and other learning. Teachers of students with visual impairment should encourage the development of listening skills along with other senses. This Practice Report discusses specific ways to gather information on a child's use of hearing, enhance the listening environment, and facilitate children's listening and comprehension skills. Strategies are drawn from the authors' experiences with children who are acquiring language, children with visual impairments and additional disabilities including those who are deafblind, and training practitioners to work with these populations.
