A Primer on Early Childhood Mental Health
Rachel Stein
Communique, v54 n1 p12-16 2025
Mental health for preschool students has not always been seen as the purview of school psychology. However, school psychologists can have a powerful impact by supporting the needs of young children. Research has shown that many children are not emotionally, socially, behaviorally, or academically ready for kindergarten. This was further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. While a confluence of factors drives this lack of preparedness, early childhood creates an opportunity to change this pattern. School psychologists, whether they work with young children or students farther along in the developmental span, know mental health is shaped by early childhood experiences. This article will share empirically based information about early childhood mental health, its importance for school psychologists, and actionable steps related to school psychology's role in early childhood mental health.
