There Is More to It Then Just Writing a Policy
Vanessa Keadle; Larry Locke
Journal of College Student Development, v66 n3 p365-368 2025
Staff and faculty at every institution could share stories about how they have seen some initiatives spectacularly succeed and others completely fail--leading to feelings of frustration and fatigue. Too often, a "good idea" or new institutional policy is developed in a vacuum or with little thought as to how professionals on campus will implement the "good idea" or new policy, given their already limited capacity. In this brief article, the authors draw on policy implementation studies and their collective experience to discuss five common barriers to effective policy implementation and offer some practical context to remove these barriers for postsecondary professionals.
