Cudahy, Edward; Link, H. Cynthia – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1991
A computerized hearing aid measurement system using simulated input and output compression hearing aids was compared to a manual technique using conventional laboratory instrumentation. Results matched closely, but the computer system was considerably more flexible and easier to use. (Author/DB)

Kates, James M. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1991
This paper discusses the problem of feedback in hearing aids and offers examples based on a computer simulation of hearing aid behavior. The available technology for dealing with feedback is reviewed, and the new digital signal-processing approaches which may finally solve the feedback problem are described. (Author/DB)

Munro, Allen; Towne, Douglas M. – Educational Technology, Research and Development, 1992
Discusses model-based simulation for training, explains an object-oriented approach, and describes RAPIDS, an authoring system for the production of interactive graphical models and instruction based on those models. Highlights include intelligent tutoring systems; transaction shells; tools for authoring models; and a course on retinal information…

Zimmerman, Donald W.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1993
Coefficient alpha was examined through computer simulation as an estimate of test reliability under violation of two assumptions. Coefficient alpha underestimated reliability under violation of the assumption of essential tau-equivalence of subtest scores and overestimated it under violation of the assumption of uncorrelated subtest error scores.…

Hartigan, John M. – CD-ROM Professional, 1993
Gives an overview of the development of multimedia, from the combination of film and computer graphics used during the 1960s to present day jet aircraft simulators. Definitions of multimedia, virtual reality, the use of compact disks to deliver digitally recorded information, and the economic need for the technology are discussed. (KRN)

Fava, Joseph L.; Velicer, Wayne F. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1992
Effects of overextracting factors and components within and between maximum likelihood factor analysis and principal components analysis were examined through computer simulation of a range of factor and component patterns. Results demonstrate similarity of component and factor scores during overextraction. Overall, results indicate that…

Goosen, Kenneth R.; Kusel, Jimie – Simulation & Gaming, 1993
Presents an interpolation methodology that duplicates and improves the results of mathematical functional relationships useful for designing business enterprise simulations and argues that interpolation is effective over the entire range of production and sales activity. (six references) (EA)

Hanges, Paul J.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1991
Whether it is possible to develop a classification function that identifies the underlying range restriction from sample information alone was investigated in a simulation. Results indicate that such a function is possible. The procedure was found to be relatively accurate, robust, and powerful. (SLD)

Solomon, David J.; And Others – Academic Medicine, 1990
In July 1989 the American Board of Emergency Medicine conducted a field test of the oral recertification examination process. Sixteen examiners and 25 examinees participated in the field test. The examination included 3 chart-stimulated recall and 3 simulated-patient encounter cases. (MLW)

Dempsey, John; And Others – Journal of Educational Technology Systems, 1994
Discusses instructional gaming and examines the impact of Thomas Malone's theory of intrinsically motivating instruction. Relevant literature is reviewed to establish common threads, and implications of the gaming literature for future study of gaming and instructional design are suggested. (Contains 25 references.) (LRW)

Zeng, Lingjia – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1993
A numerical approach for computing standard errors (SEs) of a linear equating is described in which first partial derivatives of equating functions needed to compute SEs are derived numerically. Numerical and analytical approaches are compared using the Tucker equating method. SEs derived numerically are found indistinguishable from SEs derived…

Silberstein, Otmar; Brooke, Lawrence – Vocational Education Journal, 1994
In the sixth-grade science program at Peterson Middle School in Sunnyvale, California, grants and donated labor and materials were used to build a simulated space center. One of the capsules is devoted to growing vegetables hydroponically. Eighth-grade students serve as teaching assistants in the program, and biology and chemistry enrollments are…

Mendoza, Jorge L. – Psychometrika, 1993
A Fisher's Z transformation is developed for the corrected correlation for conditions when the criterion data are missing because of selection on the predictor and when the criterion was missing at random, not because of selection. The two Z transformations were evaluated in a computer simulation and found accurate. (SLD)

Zimmerman, Donald W.; Zumbo, Bruno D. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1993
A computer simulation compared significance tests of correlation coefficients calculated from initial scores, from ranks assigned by the Spearman method, and from three kinds of modified ranks. Implications of findings for the idea that rank correlation is a nonparametric correlation method are discussed. (SLD)
