Gozzi, Christel; Bouzidi, Naoual – Journal of Chemical Education, 2008
The aim of this experiment is to study and calculate the kinetic constant of a Heck reaction: the arylation of but-3-en-2-ol by iodobenzene catalyzed by palladium acetate in presence of triethylamine in DMF. The reaction leads to a mixture of two ketones. Students use GC analysis to quantify reagents and products of reaction. They control the…

Branan, Bruce M.; Butcher, Joshua T.; Olsen, Lawrence R. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
An ozonolysis experiment, suitable for undergraduate organic chemistry lab, is presented. Ozonolysis of eugenol (clove oil), followed by reductive workup furnishes an aldehyde that is easily identified by its NMR and IR spectra. Ozone (3-5% in oxygen) is produced using an easily built generator. (Contains 2 figures and 1 scheme.)

Pentecost, Cari D.; Tangchaivang, Nichol; Cantrill, Stuart J.; Chichak, Kelly S.; Peters, Andrea J.; Stoddart, Fraser J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
A procedure that requires seven 4-hour blocks of time to allow undergraduate students to prepare the molecular Borromean rings (BRs) on a gram-scale in 90% yield is described. The experiment would serve as a nice capstone project to culminate any comprehensive organic laboratory course and expose students to fundamental concepts, symmetry point…

Scholtz, R. G.; And Others – 1968
This final report of a feasibility study describes the research performed in assessing the requirements for a chemical signature file and search scheme for organic compound identification and information retrieval. The research performed to determined feasibility of identifying an unknown compound involved screening the compound against a file of…

Peer reviewedBaker, Donald R. – Journal of Geological Education, 1972
Discussed are definition, history, approaches and methods, nature of the results, limitations, and future work in this new field. (DF)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Geology, Organic Chemistry, Reports
Peer reviewedKlesney, Stanley P. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
Changes in the 1971 edition of the IUPAC book, Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry," from the previous editions (Sections A and B, 1966, and Section C, 1965) are listed with details of the changes. (Author)
Descriptors: Chemical Nomenclature, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Science Instruction
Peer reviewedKaufman, M. – Education in Chemistry, 1971
This is the first of a two part series on Hermann Staudinger which describes the background of the discovery of chemical macromolecular structure. (DS)

Cragg, G. M. L. – J Chem Educ, 1969
Describes how the carbonylation of organoboranes in a suitable solvent can produce various alcohols, ketones, aldehydes and oxymethylation derivatives. The synthesis of alpha-alkylated ketone using alkylboranes is discussed. (RR)

Peer reviewedMak, Kendrew K. W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
NMR spectroscopy is presented. It is seen that the experiment regarding the synthesis and resolution of 1,1'-Bi-2-naphtol presents a good experiment for teaching organic synthesis and NMR spectroscopy and provides a strategy for obtaining enantiopure compounds from achiral starting materials.

Peer reviewedFortineau, Anne-Dominique – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A synopsis on the history of perfumery is presented, along with the various processes accessible for obtaining natural perfume constituents, and creation of synthetic chemicals. The important contribution of organic chemists in the invention of perfumes, aspects of fragrance chemistry, and general information on the perfume industry are…

Schroeder, Jacob D.; Greenbowe, Thomas J. – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2008
This study investigated the possible connection between effective laboratory activities and student performance on lecture exams. In a traditional undergraduate organic chemistry course for non-science majors, students could predict the products of organic reactions, but struggled to provide reaction mechanisms for those same reactions, despite…

Grove, Nathaniel P.; Hershberger, James W.; Bretz, Stacey Lowery – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2008
At Miami University, the attrition rate in the year-long organic chemistry sequence for pre-medical majors typically ranges from 30-50%. To decrease attrition, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry developed an innovative, spiral curriculum. Unlike a traditional organic chemistry course that moves sequentially through the material, the…

Mascarenhas, Cheryl M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2008
In this experiment, organic chemistry students perform reactions between three naphthyl acetate derivatives and the diazonium salt Fast-Red TR, under basic conditions. The three naphthyl acetate derivatives used in this study are 2-naphthyl acetate (1a), 6-bromo-2-naphthyl acetate (1b) and 1,6-dibromo-2-naphthyl acetate (1c). The two-step, one-pot…

Neeland, Edward G. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
A lab practical exam for second-year organic chemistry is presented that tests multiple lab skills and theory that the students have acquired directly from laboratory experiences. This exam motivates students to learn lab skills and is an effective end-of-term test for many of those skills. (Contains 2 figures.)
