Describes a study of 115 college students enrolled in a reading improvement program and an equal number of control students. Significant gains in mean grade point average in reading rate, and in reading efficiency are reported for those students who entered the program reading between 200-250 words per minute. This experiment investigated the effects of progress self-monitoring on children's achievement and percepts of self-efficacy in the context of mathematical competency development. The Belief Polarity Scale, an index of racial prejudice, was administered to 76 educators of mixed racial background before and after an interracial human relations workshop. Analysis of variance revealed that polarity scores discriminated by race and that change in polarity was a function of pretest dogmatism. (Author/BW)
