This programed mathematics textbook is for student use in vocational education courses. It was developed as part of a programed series covering 21 mathematical competencies which were identified by university researchers through task analysis of several occupational clusters. The development of a sequential content structure was also based on…

Dean, Peter M. – 1971
This study was designed to investigate the effect of allowing students to generate their own problems and make their own decisions concerning their rate of progress through the instructional materials. An IBM 1500-1130 instructional system was used for the study. A program was developed to provide 72 different prototype arithmetic practice…

Schweiker, Robert F. – 1974
One model of educational needs assessment stresses: (1) deciding what students should learn in school, (2) measuring whether they learn it, and (3) looking at gaps between desired learnings and actual learnings to identify educational needs and priorities. In this study, it was assumed that practically all students should master…

Chevalier, Jacques A. – 1971
Viewing the number system as a complex of interrelated words, three studies are described: (1) a study of the difficulty of simple addition and subtraction in different decimal positions; (2) a study of variations in the number of digits in the addend or minuend; (3) a study of the effect of irregular morphemes occurring in some number words.…

Wiles, Clyde A.; And Others – 1972
Two sequences of activities were developed to provide instruction on the algorithms for addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers. In the integrated sequence (I) the mechanics of "carrying" and "borrowing" were treated as a single process "regrouping." In the sequential treatment (S) the addition algorithm was developed before the subtraction…

Cawley, John F.; And Others – Learning Disabilities Focus, 1987
Analysis of arithmetic problem-solving difficulties among secondary school learning disabled students (N=63) indicated students had the most difficulty with problems of the indirect type and problems that contained extraneous information. Teaching suggestions are offered. (Author/DB)

Peer reviewedRiding, R. J.; Borg, M. G. – Educational Review, 1987
Eighty-four 11-year-olds were grouped in three levels of extraversion on the basis of their Junior Eysenck Personality Inventory score. They were then given an arithmetic test consisting of addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. A significant interaction between extraversion, sex, and type of operation was found. (Author/CH)

Liedtke, Werner – Canadian Journal for Exceptional Children, 1985
Suggestions are offered for reteaching basic arithmetic facts to older students who have not mastered them. Suggestions deal with thinking strategies and generalizations and remediation is based on students' understanding of the operation under consideration. (CL)
