Physical education teachers and coaches in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington were surveyed to determine the extent of their participation in professional activities, such as conferences, conventions, workshops, clinics, inservice meetings, and professional reading. A measure was developed to assess kindergarten children's interest in reading, and information about their home and school environments was collected. Results indicate that while amount of newspaper reading does not covary with knowledge of city affairs, the reasons why people read newspapers matter. If people read to learn about municipal politics, they tend to be taught. If they read for fun, they learn little. Media effects depend on motives of media users. (PD)
