Changes in the demand for entry to university education by mature students in the period 1974-80 are examined in terms of numbers of applications, subject choice, and chance of success in application. Data on college bound students from several suburban Philadelphia communities were statistically analyzed, and it was found students could be grouped according to the characteristics of the institutions they applied to, in no more than eight stable choice sets.
