Josephsen, Jens – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
A new program for training upper secondary school chemistry teachers (SE 537 693) depends heavily on student project work. A project in which lead in hair and in red wine was examined by potentiometric stripping analysis is described and evaluated. (JN)

Bourquin, Eugene – Connecticut Journal of Science Education, 1985
Outlines a science-industrial arts survey course which presents basic concepts of chemistry as applied to practical experiences. Course topics include: paints; solvents; finishes; metallurgy of iron; precious metals; calorimetry; fossil fuels; batteries; adhesives; cement; and others. The short units were designed for students with limited…

Montoya, Erick F. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Reviews three functions performed by modern computing integrators: (1) data acquisition; (2) data processing; and (3) communication. Also shows with examples how new electronic components enhance the functions of this popular analytical instrument in those areas. (JN)

Staver, John R.; Halsted, Douglas A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1985
Determined the effects of reasoning, use of models during testing, and sex type on posttest achievement in chemical bonding under controlled instruction. Indicates that chemistry students' (N=84) reasoning capabilities influenced performance; other variables were not significant. Other conclusions are noted and discussed. (DH)

Yarroch, W. L. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1985
Results of interviews with high school chemistry students (N=14) during equation-solving sessions indicate that those who were able to construct diagrams consistent with notation of their balanced equation possessed good concepts of subscript and the balancing rule. Implications for chemistry teaching are discussed. (DH)

Moore, John W.; And Others – Collegiate Microcomputer, 1983
Project SERAPHIM activities that are discussed include identifying, producing, and disseminating materials; reviewing computer-based instructional materials; distributing software; holding workshops on microcomputer use; holding symposia to determine direction microcomputer use is taking; and operating the SERAPHIM/-Chem Con Interface Project,…

Kristine, Frank J. – College Teaching, 1985
A classroom activity that allows college freshmen to examine their approach to studying course material and to discuss alternative approaches, developed and found successful in a general chemistry course, is described and discussed. (MSE)

Strauss, Michael J.; Levine, Shellie H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Extensive and detailed overhead projections, a complete set of reduced overhead miniatures in booklet form for each student, and tape recordings are used in a lecture setting to capitalize on the learning preferences of both visual and auditory learners. The use of the strategy in introductory chemistry is described. (JN)

Atkinson, George F. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Describes a series of challenges related to areas other than the knowledge content of a course to achieve a similar goal. These challenges are designed to teach not only analytical skills but also such process skills as organization, record keeping, report writing, cooperation with fellow workers, and resolution of discrepancies. (JN)

Butterfield, Charles H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Discusses a strategy used to incorporate value-related issues into introductory chemistry. Indicates that the approach, necessarily limited to few topics each year, encourages students to reflect on the causes and effect of science-related social issues and to define their personal values. (JN)

Goodwin, Thomas E. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
An undergraduate research program in natural product synthesis was established at a small liberal arts college. Discusses program goals (including the total synthesis of maytansine), objectives, and accomplishments to date. Guidelines for establishing such programs are offered. (JN)

Mills, Nancy S. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
The benefits of undergraduate research programs for faculty members are described. Proposal strategies for new faculty, working in the undergraduate setting, and role of the senior faculty are the other major areas considered. (JN)
