Peer reviewedDixon, Michael; Spradlin, Joseph – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1976
Four experiments were designed to determine if a visual stimulus class could be established under certain conditions for retarded adolescents, and if subjects trained to select some members of the set in response to an auditory stimulus would select all members of the set in response to that auditory stimulus. (GO)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Auditory Stimuli, Handicapped Children, Mental Retardation
Peer reviewedBerman, Harry J.; And Others – Sociometry, 1976
Some encoders showed variations in feelings principally through visually mediated stimuli, others through the tone of the voice. These results are discussed in the context of quantitative versus qualitative differences among the communication channels. (Author/DEP)
Descriptors: Affective Measures, Auditory Stimuli, College Students, Comparative Analysis
Peer reviewedMaltzman, Irving; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1977
Examines the effects of different-intensity unconditioned stimuli as well as generalization to related and unrelated test words. Its results indicate that semantic generalization is not a consequence of mediated generalization as traditionally conceived. (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Experimental Psychology, Flow Charts, Research Methodology
Peer reviewedDean, Raymond S.; And Others – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1988
The effects of visual and auditory modes of input on long-term memory were examined in two experiments, each with 40 and 80 undergraduates, respectively. In both experiments, visual stimulus attributes were a more salient dimension than were auditory features in the long-term encoding and retrieval process. (SLD)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Encoding (Psychology), Learning Modalities, Long Term Memory
Grassenger, Anneliese – IRAL, 1988
Demonstrates how native speakers of Italian and German rated the "native-speaker-likeness" of recorded speech of other native speakers of Italian and German. Findings indicate that subjects from southern Austria, whose own language norms differ from standard German, marked some German consonant realizations as non-native. (DK)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Comparative Analysis, Consonants, Distinctive Features (Language)
Peer reviewedWiden, Judith E.; And Others – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1987
In a study of 15 individuals (ages 15-21) with Down Syndrome, auditory brainstem response (ABR) detection levels were elevated, response amplitude reduced, and latency-intensity functions were significantly steeper than for a matched control group. Findings were associated with an impairment in hearing sensitivity at 8000 Hz for the experimental…
Descriptors: Adolescents, Auditory Discrimination, Auditory Stimuli, Auditory Tests
Peer reviewedBahrick, Lorraine E. – Child Development, 1988
Examines the development of intermodal perception in infancy by means of a new method, the intermodal learning method. Results support the claim that only subjects who had been familiarized with appropriate and synchronous film and soundtrack pairs showed evidence of intermodal learning. (Author/RWB)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Aural Learning, Cognitive Processes, Infant Behavior
Peer reviewedDowd, John M.; Tronick, Edward Z. – Child Development, 1986
Measures the degree of interdependence in timing between infants' right and left arm movements and between movements of both arms and the onsets of stressed vowels in tape-recorded infant-appropriate speech. (HOD)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Infants, Mothers, Motor Development
Peer reviewedDean, Raymond S. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1984
The degree to which concreteness of prose material presented in an auditory fashion would interact with learners' lateral preference under different right hemispheric presentation conditions was investigated with 96 adults. Subjects recalled a greater number of ideas when the passage was concrete. Abstractness interacted with cerebral dominance.…

Peer reviewedMassaro, Dominic W. – Child Development, 1984
Preschool children's evaluation and integration of visual and auditory information in speech perception was compared with that of adults. Results were used to test current views of the development of perceptual categorization and speech perception. (Author/RH)
Descriptors: Adults, Attention, Auditory Stimuli, Classification
Peer reviewedLehman, Elyse Brauch; Mellinger, Jeanne C. – Developmental Psychology, 1984
Examines evidence for the automatic processing of information about presentation modality in older adults. Younger and older adults learned a list of nouns through auditory and visual presentation modes, recalled target words, and identified the presentation modality of each word. Results suggested automatic processing for modality memory and some…

A literary style intent on relating the written word to sound via word length, rhythm, stress, and intonation, has produced a new phonic literature related to the needs of the present. (MM)
