Peer reviewedTodd, David; Pickering, Miles – Journal of Chemical Education, 1988
Notes that laboratory work should be more oriented towards puzzle solving rather than technique or illustration. Offers three organic laboratory puzzles which can be solved by melting point alone. Involves lab work at the 100-200-mg scale but still uses conventional glassware. (MVL)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedZanger, Murray; McKee, James R. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1988
Notes that this experiment takes safety and noncarcinogenic reactants into account. Demonstrates the use of diazonium salts for the replacement of an aromatic amine group by a phenolic hydroxyl. Involves two pleasant-smelling organic compounds, methyl anthranilate (grape) and methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen). (MVL)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedRothchild, Robert – Journal of Chemical Education, 1988
Suggests the use of small canopy hoods that provide flexibility of vertical and horizontal adjustment over the lab bench as a replacement for permanent hoods. Includes many safety related instances where canopy hoods should be used. (MVL)
Descriptors: Accident Prevention, Chemistry, Classrooms, College Science
Peer reviewedMinch, Michael J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Discusses a three-week summer college honors course for talented high school juniors with three exams, lab six days a week, a research paper, field trips, and student panel discussions. Presents an overview of the course. Describes the lab which uses "E. coli" for DNA recombination. (MVL)
Descriptors: Academically Gifted, Biochemistry, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedDanesh, Iraj – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1989
Describes the deterministic simulation (a given input always leads to the same output) and probabilistic simulation (new states are subject to predefined laws of chance). Provides examples of the application of the two simulations with mathematical expressions and PASCAL program. Lists seven references. (YP)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Simulation, Computers
Peer reviewedSpoerri, Peter – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1989
This two-part article deals with the design and construction of a primitive Von Neumann computer using a logic design simulator. Describes the design of the computer memory and its register structure. Six layouts of the computer architecture are presented. Lists three references. (YP)
Descriptors: College Curriculum, College Science, Computer Science, Computer Science Education
Levine, S. J.; And Others – Journal of Agronomic Education (JAE), 1989
Compared are the estimates of students and professional field soil scientists. Results indicate that with three weeks of practice and the availability of good reference samples, students can attain a level of proficiency comparable to professional soil scientists. Suggestions for grading evaluations are provided. (Author/CW)
Descriptors: Agricultural Education, Agronomy, College Science, Evaluation Methods
Peer reviewedSparkes, Bob – School Science Review, 1989
Information technology will be an important influence in education in the future. This article discusses the use of instructional technology for science teaching and considers the impact of technology on what is taught and how science is taught. (Author/CW)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Uses in Education, Databases, Educational Technology
Peer reviewedHafner, Bob; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Criticizes the Mitchell and Lawson (1988) report from the viewpoint of individual interview method. Provides Lawson's reply to the comment by showing differences in research philosophy and methods. (YP)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, College Science, Educational Research, Genetics
Peer reviewedMilkent, Marlene M.; Roth, Wolff-Michael – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Investigated were the effects of interactive computer-generated homework on unit tests, a final examination, and a comprehensive test given near the end of a Physical Science I course. The results indicated that the use of the homework reduced the effectiveness of the American College Test scores as a predictor of course achievement. (YP)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Assignments, College Science, Computer Assisted Instruction
Peer reviewedHeylin, Michael – Chemical and Engineering News, 1989
Summarizes three lectures given at a meeting of the Council for Chemical Research. The lectures discuss the shortage of scientists in the future, emphasize the importance of teaching in colleges and universities, and action needed for solving those problems. (YP)
Descriptors: Career Education, College Science, Higher Education, School Business Relationship
Peer reviewedArons, A. B. – Physics Teacher, 1989
Reviews the problem of certain logical and conceptual shortcomings in textbook presentations of the energy concepts in introductory physics. Discusses concepts and principles related to thermodynamics and echanics. Provides many formulas and diagrams. (YP)
Descriptors: College Science, Energy, Fundamental Concepts, Higher Education
Peer reviewedChemical and Engineering News, 1989
Discusses the need to encourage increasing numbers of persons to enter analytical chemistry, educate them thoroughly in basic chemical science, and expose them to the most modern methods and instrumentation. Examines some problems and several university's efforts to overcome them. (MVL)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, College Science, Conferences
Peer reviewedPenick, John E.; Lunetta, Vincent N. – Physics Teacher, 1989
Described is a university physics course bridging the gap between educational methodology, content, and applications of physics in identifying and resolving both societal and physical problems. Discussed are students' goals, instruction, and evaluation. Provides supporting texts list, a sample schedule, and sample ideas for independent…
Descriptors: College Science, Course Descriptions, Physics, Preservice Teacher Education
Houghton, Richard A.; Woodwell, George M. – Scientific American, 1989
Cites some of the evidence which suggests that the production of carbon dioxide and methane from human activities has begun to change the climate. Describes some measures which should be taken to stop or slow this progression. (RT)
Descriptors: Climate, Climate Control, College Science, Earth Science
