A rationale is presented for Early Field Experience (EFE) to support the traditional student teaching segment of preservice teacher education, arguing that EFE will provide the student with more practical experience, acquired at a more natural pace, on which to base career decisions. (MB)

Reviewed research on practicum supervision in terms of findings and research designs employed. Classified research according to counselor-supervisor similarity, training methods, and evaluation. Regular small meetings between field instructors and faculty have provided new field instructors with practicum skills. Using an andragogical model, these skills can be used in field practice education. Linkages between field and faculty can be strengthened, a mutual aid group developed, and student performance expectations unified. (MSE)

A practicum course for prospective teachers of the gifted was designed, implemented, and evaluated. The 209 teachers found the practicum teaching, observations of their teaching, and papers they wrote to be effective learning experiences.
