Turner, Edwin L. – Scientific American, 1988
Describes cosmic flukes which offer a unique window on new information about the universe. Discusses the historical background, theory, and detection of this effect. Proposes the importance of information found by the examination of these phenomena. (CW)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Gravity (Physics), Light, Physics
Peer reviewedMcPherson, Carolyn M.; West, Daniel C. – Science Teacher, 1988
Provides a brief outline of the topics covered in an astronomy syllabus including some broad goals. Discusses the design and implementation of this course in a ninth grade physical science program. Describes major problems that were encountered as well as the benefits that have been realized from the use of this approach. (CW)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Course Descriptions, Curriculum Design, Curriculum Enrichment
Peer reviewedPodmore, Francis; Fleet, Richard W. – Physics Teacher, 1985
Describes a simple three-dimensional model of Halley's Comet orbit (which is much more informative than a two-dimensional drawing) to illustrate spatial relationships and visualize how the comet moves relative to the earth. Instructions for model assembly are given along with a template which can be photocopied and glued to cardboard. (JN)
Descriptors: Astronomy, College Science, High Schools, Higher Education
Nature Scope, 1986
Provides: (1) a historical look at people's relationship with the heavens and at how the science of astronomy developed; (2) four activities; and (3) two ready-to-copy pages with student exercises. Activities include objective(s), recommended age level(s), subject area(s), list of materials needed, and procedures. (JN)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science, Environmental Education
Nature Scope, 1986
Presents: (1) a glossary with astronomy-related words; (2) a list of 25 questions about astronomy (with answers); and (3) a bibliography, listing children's books, reference books, audiovisual aids, posters, activity sources, software, and articles appearing in "Ranger Rick" magazine. (JN)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Childrens Literature, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science
Gold, Michael – Science 86, 1986
Presents recent findings obtained by the Voyager 2 mission on Uranus. Updates information on the planet's moons, rings, atmosphere, and magnetic field. Illustrations and diagrams of selected aspects of Uranus are included. (ML)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Earth Science, Elementary School Science, Elementary Secondary Education
Science News, 1984
Reviews important science news stories reported during 1984 in "Science News" magazine. These stories are in the categories of: anthropology and paleontology; behavior; biology; chemistry; computers; mathematics; earth science; the environment; medicine; physics; science and society; space sciences and astronomy; and technology. MOSAIC, 1976
The presence of gravitational waves was predicted by Einstein in his theory of General Relativity. Since then, scientists have been attempting to develop a detector sensitive enough to measure these cosmic signals. Once the presence of gravitational waves is confirmed, scientists can directly study star interiors, galaxy cores, or quasars. (MA)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Earth Science, Force, Measurement Instruments
Peer reviewedBishop, Jeanne E. – Science and Children, 1976
Suggested are a few topics or techniques which should not be presented in planetarium astronomy until appropriate levels of potential comprehension are reached. (EB)
